the last Melville (film: Un flic – Jean-Pierre Melville, 1972)

The ‘noir’ films made by Jean-Pierre Melville before ‘Un flic‘ have some visual elements that make them easily recognizable in the landscape of French cinema and many of them share a common theme – friendship. Many of his characters are criminals or violent and corrupt policemen, but almost all of them follow a moral code that involves solidarity and friendship. ‘Un flic‘, made in 1972, breaks this rule. Almost all of his characters, on both sides of the law, betray their friends and even their lovers. That is until the final scene, the interpretation of which is left up to the viewers. A change of direction in the career of the director who also authored or co-authored the scripts of his films? Unfortunately, we will never know what was to come, because ‘Un flic‘ was also Melville‘s last film. But no one knew this, and most likely not even him, because his death the following year would be sudden, while he was working on the script for the film that was supposed to follow. His filmography stopped with this film, the 13th.

In the opening scene of the film, a gang of four gangsters robs a bank located on the ocean shore. It is a stormy winter day. The hold-up goes well until the end, when one of the clerks decides to be a hero and tries to shoot the thieves. He is killed, but manages to injure one of them, triggering the events that will form the plot of the entire film. The scene, filmed as Melville knew how to do it, in a style that makes the audience feel the wind and the freezing rain, alternates with short sequences in which we see police commissioner Edouard Coleman, played by Alain Delon, in action. We don’t have to guess too much to understand that the paths of gangsters and cops will cross. The heist had only been a preparation for a much bigger coup, for which funds were needed. Not only is Coleman tasked with the investigation, but he also entertains a relationship with Cathy, the gang boss’s mistress. A coincidence too much perhaps, but we forgive it as it brings togetherAlain Delon and Catherine Deneuve, the ultimate couple of French cinema 50 years ago and perhaps until today, allowing Melville to gloss over his favorite themes – love, friendship, fidelity, betrayal.

This film does not lack scenes in bars, with jazz music and scantily clad dancers, and another robbery scene, even more detailed than the first. The technical means here are somewhat rudimentary (like in the 1930s), but in exchange we are dealing with a detailed, step-by-step description of what is happening, which gives us the feeling of being witnesses in real time. In fact Melville seems to be playing with time throughout this film, slowing it down to emphasize a few key scenes and speeding it up in the connecting scenes. The DelonDeneuve couple spend less screen time together than we would like, but instead we have an excellent cast in the gangster roles. A great lover of American films, Melville brought two very good American actors (Richard Crenna and Michael Conrad) and an excellent Italian one (Riccardo Cucciolla) to play in this film. The cinematography of Walter Wottiz is perfect for a Melville film. The empty streets of Paris, deserted at an early morning hour, are a perfect setting for a final scene that represents a splendid (albeit unintentional) farewell. Adieu, Jean-Pierre Melville!

power games (film: Tár – Todd Field, 2022)

Tár‘, one of the most talked about films of 2022 and a serious contender for the Academy Awards, with six nominations, is written and directed by Todd Field – a filmmaker who does not seem at all rushed or prone to accumulate impressive numbers in his filmography. In fact ‘Tár‘ is only his third feature film and it is made 16 years after the previous one. The fictional biography of a great musician – symphony orchestra conductor – ‘Tár‘ seems and was written for Cate Blanchett and suits her to such an extent that after watching it it is hard to imagine another actress in this role. It’s a complex and loooooong film (yes, that’s its main problem!) which in almost three hours of projection manages to bring to the screen a multitude of problems related to the world of great musicians and the way they combine their careers with their personal lives, about the place of women in a competitive world where private lives are scrutinized and mistakes are not forgiven, about the role of media and social networks in celebrity careers, and about political correctness and its verdicts in the public square of the Internet age. Above all, however, it is a film about the power games in the fascinating and complicated world of great art.

The titular heroine of the film, Lydia Tár, seems to be a model of success in every way. A student of Leonard Berstein, she is one of the world’s great conductors, winner of all possible awards, principal conductor of the Berlin Orchestra and professor at Julliard. She has, of course, had to work hard and fight fiercely for this position, as a woman and as a lesbian (her partner is the concertmaster of the orchestra), but the beginning of the film catches her at her peak and the past is not mentioned until it begins to insinuate in the present. Relationships with his daughter, an elementary school student, indicate traumas in the distant past. A conductor with whom she had a more recent relationship pursues her obsessively, and Lydia retaliates by blocking her artistic career. Her position of power seems to allow all but also requires her to make decisions that do not always seem completely professionally motivated. Sometimes it seems that she uses her power to fuel personal passions, but everything happens in an ambiguous zone. Her faithful assistant is skipped by her from a promotion, an instrumentalist in the orchestra is loses to a younger candidate the opportunity to perform a concert, in one of the lessons at Julliard she adopts a very politically incorrect attitude in a dialogue with a student. These are small and debatable incidents, but in all cases the decisions are hers alone. Perfectionism can be a great quality of a conductor who must have absolute control over every sound, tempo and nuance in a concert or recording. But life is more complicated, even than a Mahler symphony.

Director Todd Field seems to have drawn himself inspiration from his character, making some creative decisions that influence how the film looks. However, not all of them are for the benefit of the movie, some seemed questionable to me. The film begins with the credits that usually roll at the end, when the lights come up and the audience leaves the theater. It’s a nice sign of respect for the technical team, but should this take precedence over the spectators in the cinema halls? The length of the film far exceeds that of Mahler’s symphonies. Yes, this is the fashion in Hollywood, but here I feel that more brevity would have served the film. The first half hour seems like a docu-drama (an excellent one, by the way) about the life of a great musician, and another hour or so passes – spent in the stratosphere of the world of great musicians, in concert halls and luxurious apartments where the pianos don’t even fill the spaces, until the drama really kicks off. Indeed, when events rush headlong, we are dealing with a genuine drama, which calls into question the entire world of intellectual and material luxury in which we had been immersed until then. The filming style also changes, from documentary style and long one-shots (see the Julliard scene) in the first part, to nervous editing with action film techniques. Neither the world of music with its intrigues and power games, nor that of the media and social media that can destroy lives and careers come out well in the story conceived by screenwriter Todd Field. The generosity in duration allows for the construction of several memorable roles – mostly feminine. I don’t know if Cate Blanchett will get the Best Actress Academy Award this year again (it would be her third time), but her role seemed to me one of the best of a career in which I don’t remember any failures or miscasts. I’d rather bet on the award for original script. We will see. In any case, ‘Tár‘ is one of the most interesting films of the year, but also one of those that demands the attention and patience of the viewers. Using, again, the metaphor of Mahler’s music, just as his symphonies are not liked by every classical music-loving audience, this film is not intended for every moviegoer. But those who like it, will like it a lot.

shattering movie about life, age and death (film: Plan 75 – Chie Hayakawa, 2022)

Plan 75‘, the feature debut of Japanese filmmaker Chie Hayakawa, which premiered at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, is an imperfect and shattering movie, one of those films whose idea and theme will follow viewers long after they have finished watching. The film addresses one of the most acute problems of Japan and many other developed countries – the downward demographic curve caused by the aging of the population, with catastrophic consequences for society and the economy. It is quite remarkable that the film describes this problem in a dystopian setting, but the attention of the script and the director is constantly directed towards the human dimension of the characters and the story.

In the near future or perhaps even in an alternate present, the Japanese government adopts ‘Plan 75’. Anyone over the age of 75 has the right to free assisted suicide. Not only is the program funded by the government, but an unconditional bonus of ¥100,000 is also given to each senior who chooses this path. The elderly – many of whom struggle with the hardships of life, the limitations of age and especially loneliness – are also given psychological assistance. The program is excellently organized and enjoying success. After all, sacrifice is in the Japanese tradition, and what is more noble than shortening one’s life for the benefit of the common good, relieving the state of the burden of maintenance and thus ensuring an easier future for the young today?

Three main characters are followed in three parallel narrative threads, the connection of which takes place towards the end of the film. Himoru is a government official who convinces the elderly to enroll in the program and helps them fill out the necessary forms. Maria is a foreign worker from the Philippines who ends up being employed in the institution where the final stages of euthanasia take place. Michi is a single woman who at 78 years old struggles with life’s hardships, works to support herself and is in danger of being evicted from her home. Enrolling in ‘Plan 75’ is a desperate solution for her, due to economic and social pressure. All of the acting is excellent, but Chieko Baisho‘s as Michi is the most impressive. In fact, this part of the narrative is the most coherent.

The film has undeniable cinematic qualities, including some memorable shots. However, the thematic is even stronger than the artistic achievement. It is a very Japanese film in atmosphere, characters, style of interpretation, but the problems it raises are universal. The Western conception that life is more valuable than anything else is being questioned. What is the scale of values of a society that prefers shortening – even in comfortable conditions – the lives of the elderly instead of easing them through care in their final years? How are elderly people dealing with loneliness? How ‘humane’ is assisted suicide? Isn’t the very idea of suicide against human nature? ‘Plan 75‘ manages to trigger these questions in the minds of the viewers without rhetoric or melodrama, by telling the stories of truthful characters, who win the empathy of the viewers. This is a debut film that has already achieved well-deserved international notoriety.

two brothers on a boat (film: Cassandra’s Dream – Woody Allen, 2007)

Woody Allen‘s films are simple and accessible. Or at least they seem so. This is also the case with the 2007 ‘Cassandra’s Dream‘, which is part of an English series of three films by Allen, which in turn is part of the international series of films made where he found the inspiration (and probably the financial support) to make them. As in many other films written and directed by him, Allen introduces us to the characters from the first scenes, establishes the relationships between them, builds the premises of the plot that he will develop further. Everything seems clear and flows smoothly, as the veteran director at his 50th film (or around) knows how to tell a story on screen. And yet, there are often subtle undercurrents that viewers don’t immediately notice, and there’s no shortage of surprises either.

Terry and Ian are brothers. In the first scene of the film, the two buy a small pleasure boat named after Cassandra, but it is not clear if they are aware of the predictions of the Trojan priestess. Terry is a car mechanic, has a lifelong girlfriend to whom he is all but married, likes to drink, play poker and bet on dog races. Ian helps his father in the restaurant that is the family business, but he aspires to much more, aiming for real estate investments in California. When he meets Angela, a beautiful theater actress, his ambitions increase, but so does his need for money. In fact, both brothers are in dire need of cash as Terry goes into debt after losing at cards. The only resource would be the rich Uncle Howard, an international businessman. He wouldn’t refuse to help – family before all, right? The only problem is that he asks for a favor in return – for the two brothers to make disappear one of his business partners who risks denouncing him and ruining his career and fortune. Can the siblings refuse? Family before all? Every deed has a reward or a punishment – we know that from Dostoevsky.

With Woody Allen, the substrate is often deep and the references to the classics are not random at all, but they are wrapped in the dilemmas of contemporary man. His characters make decisions worthy of ancient tragedies even though they seem driven by contemporary mundane motives. Money, passion, corruption, morality are perene. In the case of this film, the first reference that came to my mind is obviously to Greek mythology, then to ‘Crime and Punishment’ and finally to the biblical story of the first brothers after the Creation. This time, however, the whole construction seems a little less solid, like a dish with expensive ingredients, but which did not spend enough time in the oven. The English atmosphere didn’t seem too well recreated to me either. It is not enough to cast English actors with the appropriate accent. Of all the characters, only Uncle Howard (played by the excellent Tom Wilkinson) combines the slight real-world awkwardness of many of Woody Allen‘s characters with enough British humor to absorb all the pitfalls of fate. Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor play their roles well, but something seems to be missing to convince us of the reality of their drama. ‘Cassandra’s Dream‘ is not a bad movie. It managed to captivate me in many moments but at the same time left me with the impression that it does not add anything new to the director’s filmography, and that if it had been made 20 years earlier it would have been a much better film.

power game (film: La Vénus à la fourrure – Roman Polanski, 2013)

Roman Polanski‘s films are never simple. ‘La Vénus à la fourrure‘ (English title is ‘Venus in furs‘) is the adaptation of a Tony Award winning play by David Ives based on a novel by 19th century Austrian writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch , which in turn is inspired by a famous Renaissance painting. von Sacher-Masoch‘s novel also has at least ten other film adaptations or films inspired by it – most of them with more or less erotic themes and flavors – plus a song by Velvet Underground. There is eroticism in Polanski‘s film too – refined, innuendo, perverse – but that is only one of the film’s many themes. Only two characters appear on screen, the only human presences, for that matter, in the entire film. The setting is a theater on a very rainy day in Paris, but it might as well be in a post-apocalyptic world where there are only two survivors left, the film’s heroes, a man and a woman. A power play takes place between them, a confrontation between the sexes, a dialogue in which the roles change just as the theater-life perspective changes. Like many of Polanski‘s films, the biography of the complicated and controversial director is not alien to the subject of the film and the way it is approached.

The story takes place at the end of a day of auditions for the lead role – of Wanda – in a stage adaptation of von Sacher-Masoch‘s novel. Everyone has left and playwright-director Thomas is preparing to turn off the lights in the theater when Vanda appears. She is a candidate who claims to be late for the audition even though her name does not appear on the list of candidate actors for the day. She convinces Thomas to give her a chance. At first sight this looks like a total mismatch, but after the first lines the director realizes that Vanda-Wanda is not only a formidable candidate but also perfectly masters and understands his play and the character she is acting. Thomas and Vanda engage in the game and what happens on stage interacts with what happens in life. The novel’s characters take over the actors, the stage director – candidate actress relationship is erased to give way to the novel’s passionate and ambiguous drama and power struggle.

What Roman Polanski manages to do in the closed space of a stage and a theater hall is amazing. The story unfolds as a permanent game between reality and appearances. Theater in film has been present in many other films, but here Polanski succeeds in recreating that feeling of direct relationship between spectators and actors that exists in theater but is very rare in films. Spectators are not only absorbed in the action, but are constantly wondering what is happening on stage, whether the lines spoken belong to the play or to life, whether the characters are from the book or from reality. Emmanuelle Seigner who is Polanski‘s wife plays Wanda, and Mathieu Amalric is cast as Thomas, who is not only a formidable actor and seems to have been born to play this role, but also bears a striking physical resemblance to Polanski. ‘La Vénus à la fourrure‘ is a strange and interesting film, ambiguous and captivating, intelligent and sophisticated – one of the best late-career films of a great director.

catching up with life (film: Living – Oliver Hermanus, 2022)

Akira Kurosawa‘s career is marked by several notable adaptations and remakes. Throughout his career, the great Japanese film director has contributed to building bridges between cultures, texts by great writers and film schools. Several of his famous films are adaptations of Shakespeare, and some of his films have been taken up as remakes or inspired other films in cinemas outside of Japan. To the latter list is now added ‘Living‘ made in 2022 by South African-born director Oliver Hermanus, which is a remake of one of Kurosawa‘s best known and most appreciated films – ‘Ikiru‘ (1952). The adaptation is faithful enough that Kurosawa‘s name appears as co-writer on the credits, but the other name is that of Nobel Prize-winning novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, himself a symbol of the bridges between Japanese and Western culture in the plan literature.

The story in the film takes place in the second half of 1953 in England. Mr. Williams, the main hero of the film, is the epitome of the English civil servant, always dressed in three piece suits, punctual, bureaucratic and formalist in behavior and way of speaking. The office he heads in the city hall, responsible for approvals for public constructions, specializes in accumulating huge stacks of files on tables (their height being a measure of the degree of necessity of the position of the owner of the desk) and passing the responsibilities as much as possible to other departments. His world is turned upside down in an instant when he learns that he is terminally ill and has only a few months to live. He would like to recover what he had not experienced before – life. But how? Apparently he had achieved what he had dreamed of as a child. He became a respectable gentleman, but on the inside he is dry, maybe dead. A young subordinate had nicknamed him ‘The Zombie’. What does life mean? Drinking and partying in neighborhoods and bars of dubious reputation? From whom can he learn to live? From debauched occasional friends? Perhaps from the young underling who seems to be enjoying her youth to the fullest? But isn’t it too late for him? Or maybe the last months of life are still enough to do something significant, to leave behind a small space of beauty, or some model of acting for good?

Ishiguro‘s adaptation does an excellent job of translating the character’s restraint and formality from Kurosawa‘s film into the restrained pathos of Mr. Williams in Oliver Hermanus‘s film. Well versed in the social codes and psychology of characters in both Japanese and English cultures, Ishiguro constructs psychological equivalents that work very well. Less successful, however, seemed to me to be the transplantation of the actual story from post-war Japan to England of the same period. The details of the story are quickly dispatched and for those who do not know Kurosawa‘s film, there are quite a few gaps to fill. The scenes depicting the English bureaucracy are delicious, but others, such as the activism of the group of women trying to build a children’s play park on a site left in ruins after the destruction of Blitz bombing, are only sketchy. Even the beautiful final scene does not quite fit into the logic of the film for those who are not familiar with the corresponding scene from ‘Ikiru‘. However, these shortcomings of the script are largely compensated by the splendid performance of Bill Nighy – an actor known for many supporting roles, who receives here the opportunity for a ‘role of his life’ and uses it to the fullest. Even if it doesn’t measure up to its Japanese model, ‘Living‘ is worth seeing for Nighy‘s performance, for the image of a London filmed in the style and atmosphere of 1953, and for the message about living life with meaning.

CHANGE.WORLD – Inteligență ART-ificială

I am the sinner, I am the saint,

I am the darkness, I am the light,

I am the hunter, I am the prey,

I am the devil, I am the savior.”

(sursa imaginii: Google’s Deep Dream – https://sugargamers.com/3-ways-ai-generated-art-could-impact-creative-development/)

a well-polished nun (film: La religieuse – Guillaume Nicloux, 2013)

Guillaume Nicloux, the director of this 2013 version of the film ‘La religieuse‘ was born in 1966, that is exactly the year that the film of the same name made by Jacques Rivette, starring Anna Karina, premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, after a year ofinterdiction due to the protests of the Catholic Church. Both films are adaptations of Denis Diderot’s 18th-century anti-clerical novel, and both take liberties in adapting the story and altering the ending. The comparison between the two films is yet another chapter in the never-ending series of remake debates. In this case, however, there is an essential difference, namely the fact that this is not an American adaptation, Nicloux‘s film being made on the same (‘our, European’) side of the Atlantic Ocean. And yet, compared to the ‘original’, this new adaptation is also less interesting and brings few new and quality elements. ‘La religieuse‘ the 2013 version is not a film without merit, but, paradoxically, it is much more ‘decent’ and brings to screen less sparks and surprises than ‘La religieuse’ the 1966 version.

The general lines of action of the novel are preserved and some scenes have exact correspondents in the two films. Suzanne Simonin is the third daughter in a family that can only afford dowries for her older sisters. Consequently, the parents decide that the girl will be destined for the monastic life. There is an additional, hidden and darker reason for their decision which will be revealed later. The young girl does not feel attracted to the monastery. Although she is completely devoid of life experience she feels that there is a much more meaningful life outside its walls. In addition, the experiences in the convent are traumatic – hypocrisy meets sadism, rigid hierarchies give the most powerful the right to decide the destinies and torment the souls and bodies of the young girls. What should be a world of peace of mind and faith turns for those who cannot adapt into a concentration universe. Attempts to escape, even when they succeed after great pains and efforts, throw the girls into another world, no less cruel and willing to manipulate and exploit them.

Guillaume Nicloux‘s film is visually impressive. Some of the scenes in the monasteries, especially those depicting religious ceremonies are shot from spectacular angles. The costumes are also stylistically appropriate, and the clothing details enhance the feeling of suffocation and even physical torture experienced by the characters who were forced to wear them. The Belgian actress Pauline Etienne undertakes the role of Suzanne brilliantly, a role which in the original version was played by Anna Karina, and is very suitable for the role, both physically and emotionally. Isabelle Huppert adds to her impressive filmography another role of a mature woman with ambiguous and dark corners in her personality – that of Mother Saint-Eutrope. She manages to be effective even though the script was less generous with her, leaving out the explicit aspects of the character’s mental breakdown. Herein lies perhaps the biggest problem with this film. The world outside the convents is just as cruel and has an equal responsibility in the tragic fate of Suzanne and many other girls in her situation. By tweaking the ending in an almost Hollywood-like direction and removing or polishing too much some key scenes, what resulted is a less gritty but also less clear cut version of the story. This version of ‘La religieuse‘ may be more beautiful but is less compelling than the 1966 one.

life? or theatre? (animation film: Charlotte – Tahir Rana & Éric Warin, 2021)

The International Holocaust Remembrance Day events gave me the opportunity to see, at an event organized by the French Cultural Institute, a film I was planning to watch for a while but somehow missed last year when it was released and distributed in cinema theaters. ‘Charlotte‘, made in 2021 by French animators Tahir Rana and Éric Warin, belongs to the category of animated films for adults that has been strengthening in recent decades and which already includes some exceptional achievements. The film can be called an animated biopic, whose heroine is Charlotte Salomon, a young German Jewish artist who was murdered at the age of 26 in Auschwitz. However, she left behind a treasure of artistic materials – around a thousand drawings -, a personal diary and letters that remain testimony to an exceptional talent and a tragic destiny. Charlotte Salomon is perhaps not well known in the art world. Excluded from formal studies and working in unconventional environments, she did not have the chance to express her formidable talent in many works whose formats are preserved in the great art museums, and most of her works that have come down to us are preserved in the archives of a foundations associated with the Jewish Museum in Amsterdam. But art history and simply history are catching up with her. Her volume of works is considered today as a forerunner of the comic book format, and as a document it is a graphic diary similar to that of Anne Frank. A German film from the 80s, a novel by a well-known French writer, theater plays, ballets and two musical shows have already been dedicated to him. To these is now added this film.

The film linearly tells the biography of the young woman born in Berlin in a wealthy family where her father and grandfather were famous doctors. As a child, Charlotte expressed in painting the trauma caused by the disappearance of her mother (a series of suicides had marked that branch of the family) and the terror inspired by the persecution to which the family is subjected because of its Jewish origin. She is talented and dreams of becoming an artist, but is expelled from the School of Fine Arts after the Nazis come to power. Refugee in France with her grandparents, she knows a few years of light, friendship and even love, but war and racial persecution will follow her here as well.

There is one very problematic aspect to ‘Charlotte‘. The screenwriters (Erik Rutherford and David Bezmozgis) chose to change one of the essential aspects of Charlotte’s biography, related to the circumstances of her grandfather’s death. The motivations were positive, but the effect is the diminishment of the credibility of the entire biographical account. The murder of Charlotte Salomon cannot be justified, nor can the death of any innocent man in the Holocaust or other genocides. But she was not a saint, but a human being, a young woman with dreams and immense talent, but also with dark sides in her character. Turning her into a role model by sweetening her biography was not, in my opinion, necessary.

Graphically, the filmmakers tried a technique similar to that of Dorota Kobiela and Hugh Welchman’s excellent ‘Loving Vincent’ from 2017 by drawing in a style close to that of the film’s heroine artist and including scenes depicting the creative process of some among his works. The effect is quite successful, without reaching the sophistication of the film dedicated to Vincent. Of course, that one had a huge investment behind it and Charlotte Salomon was no Van Gogh either. However, the drawn characters have individuality, and the way Charlotte is represented attracts the viewers’ empathy. I also thought the dubbing of the voices was excellent. I saw the French version in which the role of Charlotte is spoken by Marion Cotillard, in the English version we hear the voice of Keira Knightley.

Charlotte Salomon titled her graphic journal ‘Life? or Theater?’ If we accept the theater metaphor, her life was certainly a tragedy. The vast majority of the six million victims of the Holocaust are anonymous. Only descendants still remember them and sometimes their names are mentioned at commemorations. However, some of the exceptional destinies are known. Working frantically to complete her work, Charlotte Salomon seemed to know that fate would not grant her much time. Wanting to leave a mark, she sent us a shout through her art. This film adds to the effort to defeat oblivion.
