Spielberg – the documentary (Film: Spielberg – Susan Lacy, 2017)

147 minutes may be too much or too little for a documentary about the biography and career of one of the most important contemporary film directors. That’s exactly the feeling left by Susan Lacy‘s ‘Spielberg‘ for HBO. On one hand 147 minutes for a documentary is far above the average or the ‘norm’, although at the end of the viewing I can testify that I was permanently captivated and that I did not have the impression of repetition or boredom at any time. On the other hand, I was left with the feeling that there were enough un-elucidated aspects, enough questions that were not asked, and even important and interesting Spielberg films that were ignored or mentioned only superficially.

What I liked: The first part of Steven Spielberg‘s career, including television directing and his first films, is rendered in an interesting and well documented manner. The formation of the group of young directors and friends who conquered Hollywood in the 1970s and who have since dominated an important segment of the American film industry is also well described, including the testimonies of Martin Scorsese, Francis Ford Coppola, George Lucas, Brian De Palma. Very interesting and authentic are the discussions about Spielberg’s family, including interviews with his parents and sisters, especially since family relationships and broken parents’ marriage played a decisive role in the development of the director’s personality. Finally, the best part of the film, in my opinion, is the one that discusses Spielberg’s attitude towards his Jewishness, artistically transposed on screen into the most personal, most special, and perhaps the best film of his career: ‘Schindler’s List‘.

What I liked less: The film is based, like any documentary dedicated to a film director, on many testimonies of actors, producers, other collaborators, as well as on the comments of film critics and colleagues. These abound here as well, but their quality is uneven. Few of them bring up original information and different perspectives. Most do not go beyond laudatory superficiality. Also some of his important films were left out, while too little space was given to others, for example the sci-fi trilogy made in the early 2000s. It would also have been interesting to find out more about Spielberg – the film producer.

Considering the quantity of the material and I suspect that a significant part was eliminated during the editing, I think that this film dedicated to Spielberg contains two films. One of them, original and interesting, would be the one about Spielberg’s family and person, and their impact on his films. Mounted and presented separately I think it would have made a sensation. The other film, about Spielberg’s film work, I believe would benefit from more in-depth work. Fortunately, Spielberg’s career is still in progress, and there is still plenty of time for improvement.

CHANGE.WORLD: Cunoscute sunt căile Pământului

sursa imaginii: crutchfield.com/learn/learningcenter/car/navigation/gps_car.html

sursa imaginii: new.whatmobile.net/waze-vs-google-maps-which-is-the-best-navigation-app/

Semnalul GPS are acoperire globală totală, Internetul nu.

the saga of an unusual family (Film: Ostatnia rodzina / The Last Family – Jan P. Matuszynski, 2016)

Jan P. Matuszynski, the director of the remarkable film ‘Ostatnia rodzina‘ (‘The Last Family’) we saw at the Polish film festival organized by the local cinematheque was born in 1984. Part of the story in the film takes place before he has even been born, the rest during his childhood and adolescence. It is a debut film, but his achievement is even more formidable, because everything we see on screen during the two hours of projection gives the viewers a strong sense of authenticity. In many moments, if I hadn’t read something about the movie, I could have sworn it was a docudrama, edited using the amateur movie film, especially since the main hero spends some time filming his own life with a video camera, one of the models that were fashionable in the ’80s and’ 90s. Of course, the script written by Robert Bolesto contributes to this sensation. It is very different from that of the movie ‘Corki Dancing‘ (‘Daughters of the dance’ or ‘The Lure’) also written by him, which I saw a few days ago, a film which deals with the same period, but in a completely different style.

For many of those who lived during the communist period in Eastern Europe, the setting in which the film takes place will be very familiar. It is one of those countless bedroom neighborhoods, consisting of blocks of apartments built in a Brutalist standard style, lacking any architectural personality, in which the ‘working people’ of Eastern European cities lived their existences. In two such standard apartments in two standard buildings in Warsaw, located close to each other, lived from the 1970s until 2005 the painter Zdzislaw Beksinski (Andrzej Seweryn), his wife Zofia (Aleksandra Konieczna) and his son Tomasz ( Dawid Ogrodnik). The family was however, far from standard. Zdzislaw Beksinski was an extraordinary painter, his works combining surrealism, fantasy and grotesque have an expressiveness and a power of fascination that are out of the ordinary. Son Tomasz, a hardly adaptable young man with an uncommon sensibility, was a translator of films and a DJ promoting contemporary music in a Poland that was awakening from communist censorship and reconnecting to the world. Zofia, the wife and mother, was the support and balance point of the family.

I confess that I did not know Zdzislaw Beksinski’s name or work before seeing this movie. Those who see his work for the first time will, I think, be impressed from the first moment, as I was. The comparison that immediately comes to mind is with the Swiss artist Hans Ruedi Giger. The two belong to the same trend that continues in the second half of the 20th century surrealism and extends it towards fantastic, while distilling in their works the anxieties of the Second World War and of the atomic era. But what a difference between the environments in which the two artists created. Giger lived and created in the castle Sait-Germain in Gruyere, transformed into a fortress of fantasy and ghosts. Beksinski, his contemporary, lived in a standard block in Warsaw, and his imagination blossomed into one of the rooms of the apartment, transformed into a studio.

‘The Last Family‘ is apparently the filmed biography of a great artist but there is very little talk, almost none, about art. Zdzislaw Beksinski did not like speaking about his paintings, avoided public appearances, did not participate in the opening of his exhibitions. The film instead tells the biography of a family over three decades, it is a dysfunctional family, but what would a functional family mean in a dysfunctional society? The Beksinski’s live by the communist standard and face the same problems as all their neighbors, and more broadly, as all the citizens of the communist bloc during that time, and later during the transition to capitalism. And yet, under these difficult conditions, Zdzislaw Beksinski created exceptional art, blowing up the barriers of the conventions and pushing the limits of the imagination. This creative process is presented indirectly, discreetly, with an emphasis on the human side and on the family relations. The actors are extraordinary, the physical resemblance of the actor Andrzej Seweryn to the painter is amazing, and everything we see on the screen is authentic and moving. Without talking explicitly about art, director Jan P. Matuszynski has made one of the best films about art, about art creators and the world around them.

beware of the mermaids! (Film: The Lure – Agnieszka Smoczynska, 2015)

‘Corki Dancing‘ (‘Daughters of Dance’) by the Polish director Agnieszka Smoczynska, distributed in the English-speaking world as ‘The Lure’, is part of the increasingly rich category of films that refuse categorization or, if you want, creatively combine different genres and add something different atop. Poland has probably the most solid film school in Eastern Europe, characterized by a certain dose of sobriety and conservatism. This is one more reason why this film, which we saw at the Polish Film Festival at the local cinematheque, arouses curiosity and surprises its audiences.

The story imagined in the script written by Robert Bolesto takes place in Poland in the 1980s, during the breakdown of communism and the beginning of the transition to capitalism. The escapism of dance and strip clubs dominates the landscape. The emergence from the river that runs through Warsaw of two mermaids just our of their teens, does not produce much astonishment, especially when they fit very naturally into the world and the ‘artistic’ programs of the clubs. Mermaids and Tritons find their place as ‘minorities’ among human beings, but if those who use them for mercantile purposes or make the mistake of falling in love with them do not know Greek mythology, they will also ignore the dangers that are camouflaged by their tempting appearance and their delusional songs. The screenwriter and the film director have made full use of the ambiguities of the legends, describing a kind of violent cultural conflict between realms, amplified by the fact that the mermaids in the film sometimes also get vampire appetites. This whole story is wrapped in musical sequences well matched with the story’s unfolding, a sign that we are in the cinematic convention of musicals, which should diminish the nuances of horror.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJB5hctnxQQ

So we are dealing with a story with mermaids but we are far from the world of Disney and with a film with musical elements, horror, coming to age, militant feminism, social criticism, and everything is told with explicit nuances of kitsch with no claim of credibility. The combination works unexpectedly well. Since Tarantino, kitsch as a cinematic style is as legitimate as it can be. Director Agnieszka Smoczynska, at her first feature film, has chosen an excellent team of actors and has guided them well in a world faithfully recreated according to the appearance of Poland 30 years ago, but also including an implicit tribute to David Lynch. The story does not hesitate to shock from the beginning and continue to do so throughout the duration of the film, but the mix of explicit horror conventions and musical sequences (well chosen, composed and performed) make the whole plot seem acceptable. The two mermaids in the film start their journey together in the world of the humans, and their return to the sea is inevitable even if their two destinies at some point will split due to contact with humans. Those viewers who have the patience or the pleasure of watching this bizarre film to the end, will eventually enjoy an interesting morale.

CHANGE.WORLD: Inegalitățile, o primejdie globală

sursa imaginii: /howmuch.net/articles/gdp-per-capita-2018

sursa imaginii: oxfam.org.uk/education/resources/the-art-of-inequality

an ambiguous thriller (Film: L’amour est un crime parfait – Mathieu Amalric, 2013)

‘Love is the Perfect Crime’ (‘L’amour est un crime parfait’ in French) is one of the most formidable movie titles I can remember. A title that promises a combination of thriller and love story, which is indeed part of what the 2013 film directed by brothers Arnaud and Jean-Marie Larrieu proposes. The presence in the main role of Mathieu Amalric, one of my favorite French actors, heightened my curiosity to see this film. Of the many promises, only a part were justified.

Switzerland at the end of winter is the setting for the film. The snow-covered mountains represent since Hitchcock a scenery for films in the psychological thriller genre, with sunshine illuminating postcards landscapes behind which we can feel the threat, with snow covering tracks, traces and sometimes bodies, at least until the thaw. We deal with a plot in which part of the truth is hidden from viewers, which is a rule in most detective movies, but in this case the truth is hidden also to the heroes on the screen. Ambiguity is what characterizes their characters and feelings in this film. We are dealing with a criminal investigation (a student has disappeared and her teacher, a man with a fame of conqueror is one of the suspects) and with a late love story, but the reality behind the appearances is questionable to the very end.

What I liked: The role of Marc, the teacher of literary creation around which orbit the female students, but who is secretly haunted by his own traumas is perfect for Mathieu Amalric, who dominates the screen and the story with his feelings and dilemmas. The film is made 2-3 years before the ‘me too’ scandals broke out and the role would probably have been written differently if the film had been made now. The atmosphere of the Swiss university intellectual circles with their professional and romantic intrigues is very well rendered. The image is stylish and consistent. What I liked least: There are three women characters around Marc and the actresses’ creations are uneven. If the interpreters of Marianne (Marc’s sister – Karin Viard) and Annie (the student trying to lure Marc into a love affair – Sara Forestier) are neutral, Anna’s key character is missed by Maïwenn‘s interpretation. The script suffers from a certain verbosity that makes the film seem long and repetitive from time to time. The ambiguity of the approach ultimately turns against the intentions of the filmmakers, and many viewers will already have been lost interest in the denouement by the end of the movie. Yet another proof that the performance of one single actor, no matter how good he may be, cannot sustain alone an entire movie.

the nightmare of the nightingale (Film: The Nightingale – Jennifer Kent, 2018)

I rarely have the opportunity to watch Australian films. Some of the actors and directors from the antipodes continent made brilliant careers in Hollywood, but Australian films rarely enjoy international distribution. Maybe unfairly, because the ones I managed to see were almost without exception interesting films, belonging to different genres, but each reflecting in its own way the landscape, the history, and the mentalities of this distant part of the world. To these has now been added Jennifer Kent‘s ‘The Nightingale‘, a well-made film, but also one conceived to stir controversy and which has been able to provoke extreme discussions and reactions, and has left indifferent nobody anyplace it was screened.

If we were to put the film in a particular category, it would be the one called ‘Australian Westerns’. Australia’s history of colonization has many points in common with the conquest of the American West, and its reflection in cinematography has also gone through stages similar to those of Western American films, from heroic stories and spectacular action films, to modern versions that try to be more faithful to historical truth. I do not know the political atmosphere and the history of Australian society well, but my impression is that the violent aspects of the colonization, the conflicts between the newcomers (part criminals deported by the English justice to the penitentiary colonies, another part their guardians) and the local Aboriginal population are still largely a skeleton waiting to be exposed out of the closet Australian history. Clare, the main heroine of the film, has to survive in a lawless world, where violence is the natural way of conflict resolution. It is also an extremely stratified world, in which Clare is a multiple victim – as an Irish woman belonging to the people recently defeated by the English, as a woman, as a convict and deportee. Paradoxically, there is one class below her in the hierarchy of this world – the Tasmanian aborigines, who are waging a hopeless war against the white colonists. A war that they will lose and their nation will be exterminated.

Director Jennifer Kent wanted to highlight two important political messages, and she did not save the means and did not hesitate to shock her viewers to make those as clear as possible. One is a powerful feminist message, which makes the story of the film join the genre of films in which women who have gone through terrible traumas (rape, murder of the dearest family members) seek revenge. The other is the exposure of the atrocities up to the genocide committed by white settlers in the first century of the conquest of Australia. The latter message questions the legitimacy and morality of one of today’s most peaceful and civilized democratic societies, at least as long as these nightmares of history are not known and assumed. But there is also a human message that becomes more and more clear when Clare finds solidarity and support precisely from Billy, the Aboriginal tracker. The interaction between them starts as a relationship of social and racial subordination to become a beautiful friendship story.

Even if it does nothing to avoid shocking, the film never slips into commercial exhibitionism. Unlike Tarantino’s films, for example, there is nothing aesthetic in the violence we see displayed on screen, which has the clear purpose of arousing rejection and repulsion. The story is captivating and very well filmed, with most of the scenes taking place in the Tasmanian jungle. The actors’ interpretation is exceptional. Irish actress Aisling Franciosi realizes a beautiful and vulnerable Clare, finding in her desire for revenge the strength to survive the terrible events she goes through. Baykali Ganambarr manages to overcome the conceptual weaknesses of Billy’s role and brings a memorable character to the screen. The main problem of the film is the excess of explicit rhetoric, to the detriment of authentic experiences. The separation between the good and the bad is far too Manichean, especially when it is done in most cases along nationality lines. ‘The Nightingale’ could have benefited from a more nuanced approach and a less explicit promotion of the film’s messages. Even so, it’s a movie that’s hard to forget.

a theater love story (Film: Edmond – Alexis Michalik, 2018)

I saw the play ‘Edmond’ written and staged by Alexis Michalik in Paris almost two years ago. The show had received five Molieres prizes (the supreme distinctions of the French theater) and impressed me with the combination of modernism and respect for tradition, of perfectly professional acting with tasteful directorial innovations, placed in the service of the spectators and their experiences. Theatre du Palais-Royal where the performance took place was also the place where (about 120 years ago) the events in the play take place – the story of the creation and of the premiere of one of the most successful works in the history of French theater, Edmond Rostand’s ‘Cyrano de Bergerac’. I was looking forward to seeing the film version created by the same director, and my expectations were largely rewarded.

For the spectators who are passionate about the history of the theater and especially the history of the French theater, this film will be a delight. The sparkling dialogue, the humor based upon situations and characters, and the interpretation of the actors team made up in the good tradition of the Comedie Francaise (with a special mention for Olivier Gourmet in the role of the great actor Coquelin) seemed to me very good. Beyond the love story or story in the film’s plot, Alexis Michalik‘s ‘Edmond‘ is a love affair with the French theater and an affectionate tribute to theater creators 120 years ago. Another great quality of the film is the glamorous and colorful reconstruction of Paris in the last decade of the 19th century. From this point of view, ‘Edmond‘ walks on the traces of films like ‘Moulin Rouge!‘ directed by Baz Luhrmann or Martin Scorsese‘s ‘Hugo‘, combining meticulous documentation, attention to detail and respect for authenticity, and using computer graphics techniques to enhance history and to create the landscape of an era of fascinating social diversity and artistic effervescence.

How does the film compare to the play (which originally was based on a script that could not find financing a few years ago)? The theatrical version of ‘Edmond’ directed by Alexis Michalik was free-flowing and dynamic, in a cinematic style. The film version of ‘Edmond‘ directed by Alexis Michalik is largely based on a theatrical style in which the beauty of the text and the art of the actors transform the words into feelings, with focus on passion for theater. Technically, both achievements are impressive. As an impact on the public, however, I believe that the theatrical version succeeded better. The reason is, perhaps, that in theater the cinematic style has most of the positive influence, while in the film the theatrical style adds a difficult-to-avoid ballast.

CHANGE.WORLD: Gunoiul cosmic

Coppola dreams Eliade (Film: Youth Without Youth – Francis Ford Coppola, 2007)

‘Youth Without Youth‘ was a complete surprise to me. It is probably the least understood film of Francis Ford Coppola. Made in 2007 and filmed largely in Romania, it faithfully screens a late novella by Mircea Eliade, written in 1976. After decades of academic activity and having written some of the most important books in the field of religious history, Eliade resumed then the thread of his fantastic prose writings with a story that seems a natural continuation of his activity as a writer from the 1930s. Coppola seems to have done something similar. After ten years of silence as a director, he made this film, which is more like an independent art film. Of course, neither Eliade in the 1970s nor Coppola in 2007 had anything to prove to anyone. The novel ‘Youth Without Youth’ and the film that brought it to screen are atypical maturity creations for both artists. The story is as different from the books of philosophy or history of religions written by Eliade, as the film is completely different from Coppola’s ‘Conversation‘, ‘Godfather‘ or ‘Apocalypse Now‘.

I’m trying to understand the negative reaction of most critics who have seen and have written about this film. Viewers seem to be divided in opinions, but not too many people have come to see the film because of the negative press and its distribution. The story begins in Romania immediately before the Second World War, continues in neutral Switzerland during the war, to reach the shores of the Mediterranean and the plateaus of northern India in the coming decades. The ideas of returning to the age of youth or crossing the borders into and from worlds in which time is frozen or flows in directions and at paces different from those of human lives are far from being new in cinema, from Murnau‘s’ ‘Faust‘ ‘made in 1926 to’ The Curious Case of Benjamin Button‘ that was released one year after ‘Youth Without Youth‘ Coppola’s approach is unique in that he has read, understood, and wanted to bring to screen Eliade’s philosophy and the atmosphere of his fantastic writings. The film can of course also be viewed as an action movie, with elements of mystery and espionage, or as a romantic story in a fantastic context. Viewed from these perspectives the film is reasonable or even good, but not at the level of a director of Coppola’s fame. The disappointment of these spectators is the outcome of the combination between the misunderstanding of Eliade’s world and the different expectations from a film signed by Coppola.

Dominic Matei, the hero of the film, goes through events and experiences typical of the heroes of Mircea Eliade‘s fantastic prose. Tim Roth‘s acting succeeded in my opinion to portray the dilemmas of the intellectual who, to a certain extent, manages to use his scientific training to understand what is happening to him, to later accept that his fate is subject to other laws and it is part of a system of phenomena for which another way of understanding the world is needed. The lovers’ dilemmas and the unusual love story are well brought to the screen with the help of Roth’s partner in the film, Alexandra Maria Lara. The fascination of the East, its philosophy and landscapes, is also present. Languages (modern and ancient) also play an important role. The Romanian atmosphere is surprisingly well described on the screen. A team of valuable Romanian actors did not miss the opportunity to support the film and play under Coppola’s direction. Among other, this film occasions the last screen appearance, the last scene in the career of Adrian Pintea, who died shortly after the filming ended.

It is a well written and beautifully filmed movie. Coppola’s surprise by making a rather introverted film, faithful to the writing and thinking of a writer little-known outside Romania, found many of his fans unprepared. The American director decided not to make their lives easy and refused to translate what he read and felt in Eliade into metaphors or stereotypes familiar to American commercial cinema. He took the risk that the film would please a small part of the audience and puzzle many others. I belong to the first, happy, category.
