When the titles of a movie announce that it is ‘inspired by a true story’ I automatically begin to suspect the credibility of what I am about to see. My experience as a film buff has repeatedly demonstrated that the present-day or the historical reality are not guarantees of the artistic authenticity of what we see on screen. Just as fiction literature is different than reportage, feature movies are evaluated on criteria other than documentaries. ‘Den 12. mann‘ (‘The 12th Man‘) is inspired by the historically documented bravery of a hero in the history of World War II, a character with legend status in Norway. We are warned from the beginning that even the most shocking scenes in the film (and there are many that compete in this category) really happened in the year of war 1943 in occupied Norway. However, ‘Den 12. mann‘ aims to be more than just an action movie, and it is precisely here that I think it lacks nuancing and authenticity. Another mistake is also the presentation of the denouement from the beginning, which cancels much of the potential suspense (at least for those less familiar with the history of Norway) of what will follow. This does not mean that there are not enough reasons to consider this movie interesting, especially for amateur viewers of certain genres. But its creators gave up to some of the magic from the start.
The story has two heroes, or rather a hero and a counter-hero. The hero is Jan Baalsrud, a Norwegian officer and intelligence agent, who was the only survivor of a group of 12 soldiers who took part in a failed commando operation in 1943. Trying to find his way back from occupied Norway to neutral Sweden, Baalsrud lived a formidable experience of bravery and survival despite his wounds and the extreme weather conditions in northern Scandinavia. The counter-hero is the German SS officer Kurt Stage, who is kind of synthesis of all the dark features that can be found in the depictions of Nazi officers in films about World War II, from sadism to obsessive precision in executing the most criminal orders. Baalsrud is interpreted by the Norwegian actor Thomas Gullestad who bravely takes on a role of a hero and of a survivor in a genre that has given memorable creations to famous actors such as Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio. Kurt Stage is played by Jonathan Rhys Meyers, whom I admired in the TV series ‘The Tudors‘. His talent is wasted in this role that requires mostly grimaces and hysteria. From Henry VIII to this schematic role the distance is long and not in the right direction.

Like the main characters, the film also has two facets. Dutch director Harald Zwart seems much more familiar and convincing in the action part of the film. Paradoxically, it is precisely the extreme scenes we see in the film that are the most believable, and this is not only because we are assured from the beginning that the facts happened in reality. Zwart is talented in this genre, and is aided by skilled cinematography and editing specialists. However, the film fails to convince as to the motivation of the characters, and the fault is the schematic manner both the positive (Norwegian patriots) and the negative (Nazi occupants) characters are built. This aspect of the film is more like patriotic propaganda of the kind that rarely have a positive effect on the screen. These very obvious differences in approach result in the audience being targeted by this film (apart from the Norwegian home audience) to be made up of action and survival movie lovers, which I don’t think was exactly the producers’ intention.
‘Le Mepris‘ (‘Contempt‘) is an attempt by Jean-Luc Godard to use a ‘state-of-the-art’ format and cinema technology for the year 1963, when the film was made. What does Godard do when he has a screen format and film usually reserved for historical blockbusters or high-adventure action movies and an exceptional cast including Brigitte Bardot at the peak of her sex appeal? He makes a film about people making films and about the conflict between the quality films and the commercial films of the big studios, between cinematography as art and cinematography as business. The pretext is a failed love story, the story of the breakup of a marriage. We obviously have a formula known as ‘film in film’ (even ‘film in film in film’ I could say) but the way it is designed made me wonder which is the outer packaging is and which is the inner packaging. Godard is playing an interesting intellectual game with the spectators, but this game does not necessarily generate emotion.
If the film’s producers intended to create a framework that would highlight Brigitte Bardot, at that time the supreme symbol of beauty in European cinema, I can say from the perspective of the time passed that Godard succeeded. ‘Le Mepris‘ includes some of Bardot‘s famous takes (root also to a few still images) included in any album or montage that brings back to the minds of those who lived the era or present to those who came later the icon of the female goddess of the period . Her acting qualities, as many as she had, were not revealed to me in this film. Is it possible that Godard intended to create a character that wraps the eternal feminine mystery in the most attractive packaging possible? The mystery is complete, and it is all the more shocking because Bardot has as partner Michel Piccoli, who, far from staying in her shadow, succeeds to create in his first role on screen a picturesque and expressive presence. The communication between the two and the sentimental plot that represents at least the pretext if not the substance of the film, however, seemed completely missed.
Godard was probably interested in something else, namely telling a story about the film industry, about people trying to make art, given that those who sign checkbooks are only interested in commercial success (and possibly their beautiful wives). For this he hired the famous director Fritz Lang who plays his own role here, of a great creator of the ’30s who having lived into the’ 60s rides on his own legend and struggles for survival fighting with the materialistic and uneducated film producers. It is a document role that Lang assumes with naturalness and charm. Otherwise, each of the five characters in the film has a different style of acting, which contributes to the impression of a poorly finished collage. Godard is experimenting. The camera suitable for historical panoramas is used for indoor scenes and intimate dialogues. The soundtrack mixes the direct recordings of the ‘nouvelle vague’ with intrusive violin music of the movies of the 40s, and generally the sound of the film has passed a difficult half-century, the dialogues being at times incomprehensible.
The movie in the movie in the movie is a story about the gods of Ancient Greece. To a large extent, ‘Le Mepris‘ was intended to be a story tailored to the image of goddess Brigitte Bardot, but Godard transformed the film into a metaphor of the cinematography of the time and of the relationships between its people. My sensation was similar to that I feel in front of minimalist and cerebral modern art. I understand and respect the author’s intentions, my logic is challenged which is good, but the emotion is missing.
Bruce Willis is one of the famous actors whose names appear in the credits of Edward Norton‘s ‘Motherless Brooklyn‘, the actor who has been a director for over two decades writing this adaptation of a Jonathan Lethem‘s novel that directed and release now on screens. Detective Frank Minna, Willis‘s character, dies about five minutes after the beginning of the film, which is a sign that it is not one of those action films in which he (otherwise an excellent actor) has specialized in the last decades. But Minna leaves behind a mystery to be solved by his employee Lionel Essrog (Edward Norton) and who will immerse him in a complicated plot with ramifications in the political corruption surrounding New York’s city developments, and us, as spectators in one of the most authentic cinematic experiences, a time travel in the American reality of the 50’s.
The talented actor who is Norton was of course fascinated by the role of the detective struck by a nervous illness (Tourette’s syndrome) that produces mechanical tics and involuntary and ‘unconventional’ verbal expressions. His acting performance is remarkable, but there are plenty of other reasons that make ‘Motherless Brooklyn’ one of the most exciting films of a season among the best in the last decade. To say that the world of New York 60 years ago is well reconstructed on screen is too little. Every detail is compelling and natural, so we have the feeling that we are immersed in this world, with its lights and darkness, with racial inequalities and social injustices, with coin phones and with the fog engulfing the bridges connecting Manhattan to the rest of the city, with nightclubs and the ubiquitous smoke of cigarettes. And then the music – the superb soundtrack of the film, the jazz of the mid-20th century, the sound and rhythm of the city with its joys and despairs.
It would be unfair to mention only Norton‘s acting and omit a team of first-hand actors, some famous, others about to become famous. Gugu Mbatha-Raw is an actress I haven’t noticed before and who is launching, I hope, a great career. Bruce Willis appears little, but enough to remind us of how good an actor he can be, and to trigger the whole plot of the movie. Willem Dafoe is amazingly different here, just as amazingly different and very good as in any role he play. The only one who gives a sense of repetition is Alec Baldwin. I understand his motivation on playing negative roles of tycoons or corrupt politicians, but he does it too often in the same tone, thus risking becoming unconvincing. The message that the corruption of politicians and capitalist sharks seems to have remained the same for more than half a century is obvious and does not require explicit overstatement. ‘Motherless Brooklyn‘ is a film that manages to convince through the mastery of reconstruction, the emotion created by the relationships that are established between the characters and the empathy for those different from the norms of the times.
istoria genului ‘science fiction’.

Watching movies at a festival such as the Nordic film festival that is currently taking place in several cinematheques in Israel, among which the one in my city sometimes has disadvantages. The second movie (or the next ones!) seen on the same day may catch you as a more tired spectator, or under the impression of the previous movie, or confused by the alternation of styles and genres. This is, perhaps, what happened to me watching the Norwegian director Hans Petter Moland‘s film ‘Ut og stjæle hester‘ (or ‘Out Stealing Horses‘), a psychological drama with references to the relatively recent history, interestingly constructed, and benefiting from the participation of an excellent team of actors. And yet, although I really liked one of Moland‘s previous films (‘In Order of Disappearance‘), I was a little stuck watching this movie. The fault may be mine, but not only mine.
The story takes place in 1999, on the threshold of the millennium, that period exactly 20 years ago, when the entire planet was preparing for parties and was obsessed with the millennium bug. The main hero (the excellent Stellan Skarsgård) seems to be trying to run away from the world after he his wife had died in a traffic accident, buying a house in a village far from the turmoil of the world. It is precisely here that the past reaches him through the accidental encounter of a forgotten friend from adolescence. The film reconstructs through interleaved flashbacks the decisive summer of his coming to age, in the years immediately following the war that had left traces in people’s souls and in the relationships between them. We progress in the remembrance of the past together with the old man. But how much of memory can be trusted after a lifetime has passed? Was the reality then known, understood, and especially as does it matter today?
The questions are interesting, but one of the problems of the film is that the scriptwriter (also Moland adapting a novel) and the director try to give them a little too explicit answer, along the lines of Buddhist philosophy. Another problem is the lack of dynamism in the evolution of the characters. The film is beautifully filmed and played brilliantly (by Skarsgård, but also by the young actor who plays him as a teenager, and by the whole team), and yet ‘Out Stealing Horses‘ failed to captivate me, introduce me to the story, involve me. The distance between me and Scandinavia, its history, its people and problems, has not been completely eliminated in this film.
This is the year of family movies, or movies about families. Good movies. The family that is at the center of the Danish film ‘Dronningen‘ or ‘Queen of Hearts‘, winner of the Sundance Film Festival’s public award, is in many ways similar to one of the two families in the Korean film ‘Parasite‘ that picked Palme d ‘Or the Cannes. It’s a wealthy family that lives in a luxurious villa, surrounded by rich vegetation that will play a role in the story and atmosphere of the film. In the two floors villa, designed and furnished according to all the rules of the Scandinavian design, the family of the family of doctor Peter and his wife Anne, a lawyer specializing in crime and teenage abuse cases, lives an apparently happy and quiet life together with their twin girls who have a childhood sprinkled with riding lessons and readings from Lewis Carroll. The balance of the quiet happy family life will be broken by the appearance of the disturbing element represented in this film by Gustav, Peter’s son from a previous marriage, a young man just out of adolescence, with some problems and resentments for the early exit of the father from his early life.
I will refrain from telling more of the story of the film, as the action evolves gradually, with many surprising turns both in what happens on screen but especially in the psychology of the characters. As with ‘Parasite‘, we will have trouble trying to fit this film into a cinematic genre. It is a family drama combined with a story about coming of age, an intrigue of love and passion with extreme eroticism, a strong social commentary on the appearances of bourgeois life in the age of political correctness and the apparent protection of troubled youth, and a psychological thriller. Everything is filmed flawlessly, in an elegant and aseptic setting surrounded by an eternally picturesque nature. The film aesthetics makes the brutality of some of the relationships and the action of the characters that we are witnessing appear even more shocking. The film seems to continue in the 21st century the themes of some of Ingmar Bergman‘s films, with a frankness and brutality that reminded me of Michael Haneke.
It’s almost unbelievable that this is only the second film of director May el-Toukhy. ‘Queen of Hearts‘ (for which she is also a screenwriter) is a well-written, smartly constructed, beautifully filmed and impeccably played movie. A film that adds to my recommendations in a cinematic season blessed with many interesting films that challenge the minds and hearts of quality movies fans.
November 21, 2019 may remain in history for several reasons. One of them is the fact that on this day, the premiere of the documentary ‘Spirits in the Forest‘ took place simultaneously in many cities around the world, The event that inspired the film is the concert of the group Depeche Mode that took place in Berlin in 2017 as part of their Global Spirit Tour. The information provided by the event organizers indicates that these screenings are intended to be unique events with the public, so I can consider myself lucky because our local cinematheque was one of the locations where the documentary was screened. If indeed the public screenings will be limited, even for a while, this movie has a chance to become, at least for the Depeche Mode’s enthusiastic fans audience, another item in the series of cult objects that support the band’s fame, beyond its musical merits.
The film makers chose a structure different from that of other musical documentaries. They did not present the concert from start to end, and did not include behind the scenes information or expert comments about the musicians and their music. Instead they chose to focus on the lives of six fans of the band from six different places in the world – Mongolia, Colombia, United States, Romania, France and Germany – all coming to Berlin to see their idols. They went into their biographies and listened to testimonies about how Depeche Mode’s music influenced their lives. One of the women had been suffering from cancer and the group’s music accompanied her long and painful hours of treatment. The man in Colombia was separated from the two teenage children and part of their connection was to create music videos in which they played the band’s music. The young woman from Mongolia had learned English using the texts of the group’s songs. Of course it is only a sample, but it can also be a key to understanding why tens of thousands of spectators, sometimes coming from all over the world, gather in halls or stadiums to experience such events.
There is a risk that the fans of music documentaries and filmed concerts will be disappointed. For example, I’m not a fan of Depeche Mode, and I didn’t find out much about the band in this movie. It seemed strange to me to subtitle the dialogues although all the interviewees spoke clear and impeccable English, but not the texts of the songs. The music of course eventually captivates and is well filmed, but it was not the focus. ‘Spirits in the Forest‘ is a movie less about Depeche Mode and more about some of the fans of the group.
Feminine and feminist cinema. Is there such a thing? If there is one, I think ‘Portrait de la jeune fille en feu‘, the film written and directed by Céline Sciamma, which received the best screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival, would be the best example. The film is designed, made and played almost exclusively by women, actually there is no consistent male character, and in fact almost no men show up on screen excepting the introductory and the final scenes. Although the action takes place sometime, at the end of the 18th century, in a world of men, where those enjoyed almost exclusively political and economic rights, it describes a mini-universe of women and their struggle to be at least in part master on their fate, and to assert themselves socially and artistically. If anyone is shocked by this concept of an exclusively feminine movie, they should think about the countless war or action movies, or about westerns in which the heroes are exclusively or almost exclusively men. ‘Portrait de la jeune fille en feu‘ is also a contemporary response to the misogyny that dominates part of the history of cinema. But first of all it is a beautiful film with expressive and important messages.
There are four main characters in this film, all women, all forced to fight the rules and prejudices of the time and society in which they live. The Countess (Valeria Golino) lives on an island in Normandy and dreams of returning to her native Italy, which she had left behind by marriage. The only way that is accessible to her seems to be the marriage of her daughter Heloise (Adèle Haenel) with an Italian, but for this she needs a marriage portrait. After a failed attempt, Marianne (Noémie Merlant), an artist independent in character, with apparently a little more life experience, is invited. She also feels constrained in her art by the limits imposed by the society to women artists. The quartet is completed by the servant Sophie (Luàna Bajrami) who also has her secret – an unwanted pregnancy, which was very difficult to get rid of in those times. Between Heloise, just out of the monastery, forced into a future marriage before she could taste life, and Marianne, the artist who sublimates her feelings in art, a relationship starts, a relationship that will evolve into something that has no chance in the times in which the story is placed.
There are many interesting things in this film, but I think its charm comes in particular from the sincerity and lack of emphasis with which the relationship between the two girls is described – the discovery of the other but first of all the self-discovery of each one, the hesitations and the joy of being in each other. find in the other. Beautiful and convincing. The image is beautiful, almost every frame is elaborately elaborated in color and composition. The source of inspiration is the art of the period in which the action takes place, the avant-garde art of that period I would say, because it iuses the palette of artists who would dominate French art until the middle of the 19th century – Gericault, Millet, Corot. The film does not have a music soundtrack, but the music itself plays an important role, which deserves to be discovered when watching. The political message is clear and assertive, and we cannot help but sympathize with those women, each forced to face her own destiny alone, a century before women’s rights became a topical issue in Europe. ‘Portrait de la jeune fille en feu‘ is a film about art, about love, about the place of women in the world. A movie that deserves being looked for and seen.
I decided to see ‘Le Silencieux‘ especially for Lino Ventura, an actor whom I greatly admired in the 60s and 70s. Specializing in ‘rough’ characters from one side or the other of the law, Ventura played in feature films. action – detectives and spy – of which few have passed the Iron Curtain, the other side of which we are in those years. So I have quite a lot of his films from that period to be recovered through watching, including this film made in 1973 and directed by Claude Pinoteau, a director whom I know nothing about, who was at the time his first feature film. I have nothing to regret, because ‘Le Silencieux‘ is a well-written film, and Ventura‘s acting performance lives up to expectations.
Viewers will find themselves immersed in a spy film, but it is not an action movie like the James Bond series (which had already recorded a decade of success at the time) but rather a psychological film. The main hero played by Lino Ventura, a French scientist kidnapped 16 years earlier by the Soviets and recovered by the British intelligence, could very well be mistaken for a hero of John Le Carre’s novels, a hero inadvertently involved in the secret wars, who’s life is stolen and who finds himself obliged to act in the service of causes in which he does not believe. His attempt to recover his life or even to reconcile himself with his own conscience is similar to the dilemmas of heroes of the spy films of the last part of the career of Alfred Hitchcock, the master of suspense, quoted quite copiously in this film, especially in the natural scenery backgrounds and the use of music.
Today’s viewer has plenty of reasons to enjoy this movie, apart from Ventura’s excellent acting game. The spectacular scenes are not lacking but the attention is drawn to the hero’s fate and turmoil. The 1970s France and Switzerland are as beautiful as today, minus the crowds on the roads at a time when there were probably 1% of today’s cars. The spy movie is a genre in which a movie can become very quickly out of date, especially if it focuses on the volatile political issues in contemporary history where enemies and friendships disappear and appear quickly.’Le Silencieux‘ avoids this trap by focusing on the fate of the main hero, and thus manages to maintain interest despite the passage of time.
