horror comes from deep inside (film: The Lighthouse – Willem Dafoe, 2019)

I believe that ‘The Lighthouse‘, the film directed by Robert Eggers, needs two sets of warnings. First of all, it’s a horror movie, so those who don’t like the genre would be better off avoiding it. For the enthusiasts, I think it is good that they be told that on one hand they may be disappointed with the rhythm, on the other hand certain elements of horror go beyond the limits of the genre. It is a psychological film, the tension builds up slowly and comes from the nature of the two characters that occupy the screen throughout the film, and it takes about half of the screening time until the truly frightening events start and unfold. By then, viewers risk being completely absorbed into the atmosphere, which might seem paradoxical for a film whose action takes place in the 19th century. The reason is, I think, that the horror of ‘The Lighthouse‘ comes from within, from the darkness of souls of the two heroes. These kinds of feelings have no historical specificity.

The film is inspired by a real historical case that happened on an island near the southwest coast of England in the late 18th century, a story that has already inspired another film with the same name in 2016, a BBC radio play, as well as documentary films. Robert Eggers moved the action a century later, and near the coast of New England. Two lighthouse keepers are sent to the island for a one-month tour of duty. Relations between the veteran played by Willem Dafoe and the disciple played by Robert Pattinson unfold slowly in the first part of the film. The tensions inherent in life in seclusion, the routine, the boredom, are the trivial bricks from which is built up the edifice of the conflict that bursts with the storm that will prevent the arrival of the exchange shift. There is also an ecological message in the film, about the conflict between humans and the nature symbolized by the seagulls that become as threatening as in Hitchcock‘s ‘The Birds‘. But are these real birds, or are they actually prisons of the souls of sailors lost in the storms, as the legends tell? And are the two men what they seem to be? Even from seemingly realistic scenes, before the movie slips into fantasy and nightmare, we understand that we are dealing with a game of identities. We also have here a Symbolist approach to the legend of Light whose brightness and warmth can kill the uninitiated who dare to get too close to its source.

It is fascinating to watch the dialogues between the two characters. There is a difference of rank and of social classes between them, which is reflected in the language. The veteran lighthouse keeper played by Dafoe speaks in parables and quotes, his language being that of Captain Ahab in ‘Moby Dick’. Pattinson‘s apprentice is mostly silent at first, then, when he seems to start to open his soul, does so in the slang of the lower classes, but it becomes clear that he builds an identity screen hiding terrible facts from past. In the end, words give way to images, and each of the characters gets to be seen through the eyes of the other or maybe even in the other’s nightmares. As the fog leaves place to the storm, the horror unleashes and overwhelms everything. The performances are terrifying, so is the soundtrack. Eggers’s cinematography uses black and white, and the screen format of classic films of the genre. It is a reverence for the horror masters of the past, of course, but the imaginary fantasy nightmare that dominates the final scenes far exceeds what the predecessors dared, and will accompany the spectators after the end of the film.

much more than ‘The Scream’ (art documentary: Exhibition on Screen: Munch 150)

Edvard Munch is one of the most famous names in the history of painting and probably, at the same time, one of the least known artists. The reason is largely due to the celebrity of single painting – ‘The Scream’ – which has long entered popular culture and has reached record prices at auction sales putting the rest in shadow. Too few of those who met one way or another ‘The Scream’ know more about the complex and prolific artist that was Edvard Munch. The retrospective exhibition organized in two museums in the Norwegian capital in 2013 was an excellent opportunity to recover this lack of information. For those who did not have the opportunity to visit the exhibition, the documentary ‘Munch 150‘ in the ‘Exhibition on Screen’ series produced by Phil Grabsky fortunately gives them the opportunity to virtually visit this event, probably the most extensive Munch exhibition ever organized.

The writer and art commentator Tim Marlow is the host of the film, which chronologically follows the artist’s biography in parallel with the discussions of the most representative works of the two parts of the exhibition (until 1904 at the National Museum of Art, between 1904 and 1944 at the Munch Museum) with the works in the University Hall as a supplement. Two of the curators of the exhibition and other experts in the biography and creation of Munch collaborate. The most representative stages and works are presented: realistic paintings from youth, the theme of death inspired by family tragedies, the ‘Frieze of Life’ cycle, the Parisian period, ‘The Scream’, the landscapes, the nudes, the self-portraits. A few of the extremely original elements of technique are presented, some anticipating with decades the processes used later by expressionists and abstract expressionists. The details of his personal life and his complicated relationships with women describe the context of some of his best known works.

Made in 2013, ‘Munch 150‘ is one of the first films in the ‘Exhibition on Screen’ series and it is visible that the format was not yet perfectly stabilized, and some visual elements such as filming close the details of the paintings, many of them can be omitted even by those who are in front of the paintings, are not yet present. I have never appreciated the use of actors in such documentary films, nor do I think that the presence of an actor who wants to represent Munch when reading journal pages or correspondence would adds value here. Despite these minor minuses, ‘Munch 150‘ is a precious documentary about one of the most important artists in the history of painting and a unique document of the major exhibition dedicated to him.

CHANGE.WORLD: Fascinația dinozaurilor

the lost hammer (Film: Patrick – Tim Mielants, 2019)

Belgian director Tim Mielants already has an impressive number of episodes in television series on his record. ‘Patrick‘ is his first feature film for the big screen and it is clear the director’s effort to liberate himself off the pattern of the fixed formats and themes specific to television shows. The result is a strange and original film, sprinkled with many signs of directorial talent, but which at left me a bit puzzled about what it desired to convey. Of course, Tim Mielants may just have intended to demonstrate his potential, or it might have been me missing some deep meaning buried in inaccessible metaphors. Or is it some Belgian existential spleen? I suggest that you watch the movie and decide.

‘Patrick‘ (or ‘De Patrick’ in the original version) is the story of a confrontation with mourning. Or maybe it’s the story of a lost hammer. Both variants are equally possible, and some more. The story takes place in a summer vacation resort where the vast majority of guests practice nudism. As a result the viewers are permanently confronted with the images of naked or almost naked bodies, but without any sexual connotation. The visual shock works for about five minutes, after which the nudity becomes as trivial as is probably the custom in such a holiday resort. The hero of the film, Patrick, is the janitor of the resort and the son of the owners. His father dies, a death not too unexpected, because he was seriously ill, but Patrick seems rather affected by the lack of one of the hammers in his tool kit, used to create elegant, beautifully finished wooden chairs, worthy the work of select designers. Is this obsessive search of the hammer a way to deal with grief? Is Patrick affected by any mental condition? Or is he just a simple boy who is incapable of communicating, who has not had the time in his 38 years of life to know the world? Or maybe he is doing the most logical thing of all. After all the father’s death is irreversible, but the missing hammer can be found, and then his world order is – to the possible extent – restored. The answer is left to the viewers, I have not been able to reach any conclusion.

Patrick’s role is played by Kevin Janssens, an actor who also comes with an extensive television experience. His character is closed on itself, but despite the lack of communication or perhaps because of it, he manages to generate empathy. The rest of the distribution contributes to the creation of a strange, slightly absurd atmosphere. The practice of nudism has as an ‘ideological’ purpose the elimination of social barriers, but the the more naked the characters are, the more anti-socially they behave. What would have been left of the story if the action had not taken place in a nudism village? The story manages to catch the attention for most of the time, oscillating between social satire with absurd and grotesque nuances, and police mystery with hints of horror. There are many interesting elements in Tim Mielants‘ film, including some scenes in which the nature of the Ardennes with the sun hardly creeping through the trees of dizzying verticality plays an important role. At least one scene, that of the funerals, has a wonderful cinematic beauty. ‘Patrick‘ announces, I hope, the career of a talented director. I hope that he will also find consistent stakes in the subjects of his upcoming films, in order to harness this potential.

magic in the 19th arrondissement (TV series: L’agent immobilier – Etgar Keret, Shira Geffen, 2019)

The local cinematheque gave us last night the opportunity to see the Franco-Belgian mini-series ‘L’Agent immobilier‘ written and directed by Etgar Keret and Shira Geffen. The four episodes with a total duration of three hours could very well be a standalone film. There would be not too much to edit, because a film with a duration of almost three hours would not be something extraordinary today. Even more so as we deal with an original well-written script, full of surprises and upheavals, a with a story in which the psychological thriller, the fantastic film, the social and family drama, and the comedy of characters and situations combine into an interesting and well-paced film. ARTE is the main producer of this film, but as co-writter and co-director Shira Geffen told the audience in the discussion that took place after the end of the screening, viewers of the European television station will see the film only in May. Until then it participates in the festival circuits and can be seen in selected cinemas. Don’t miss the chance!

In Hitchcock‘s ‘Psycho‘, the motel at the crossroads is much more than set and background, it plays an essential role in the story. In many films that followed, the motel was replaced by a cottage in the mountains, an isolated mansion, or a banal villa in the suburbs, which in one way or another acquire the magical qualities of influencing the lives of those who live there, permanently or temporarily. This role is played in ‘L’Agent immobilier‘ by a multi-store building in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, a building long past its glory days, decrepit and almost abandoned except for one old lady tenant who must disappear one way or another to make room for progress, that is, for a modern sky-scrapper that generates solid profit. Olivier, the hero of the film played by the formidable Mathieu Amalric, inherits this building at the death of his mother, and from here begin his misfortunes and troubles. The building has its own history, related to the unusual story of his family, and the following series of events will resemble a roller-coaster ride in a demential amusement park. Viewers will alternate ‘horror’ thrills with portions of healthy laughter, accompanying Olivier’s adventures that include several encounters with death, time travel, messing with gangsters and a total revision of the family relationships with his father and his own daughter. A talking fish accompanies him on this journey, and it is left to the audience to whether it is capable of the magic of fulfilling the three wishes in the fairy story. Unusual? We probably shouldn’t be too surprised, because the script is written by Etgar Keret.

From the discussion with Shira Geffen I learned that the script originally written in Hebrew did not find its sponsors on Israeli television stations and it is a great shame. However, the translation into French is perfect, not only in language but also cultural-wise, si I was delighted by the sparkling dialogues in the language of Voltaire and Fabrice Luchini The Israeli presence is marked by … the perfect Hebrew-speaking gangster and his kid (played by the son of the 12-year-old filmmakers) with whom the hero Olivier will cross paths. The film also mentions the Holocaust, in a way that only a second-generation Israeli creator, the son of survivors, can do. The film (the series) has boldness and insolence, but also fantasy, humor, sensitivity. It is largely carried by Mathieu Amalric, almost permanently present on the screen, who adds yet another splendid role to his repertoire. Among other good actors I need to mention Eddy Mitchell, a veteran rock star in France, who left his mark in the movies as well, playing in more than 50 films and often leaving memorable traces (I saw him recently in Bertrand Tavernier‘s ‘Coup de Torchon‘ from 1981. Here Mitchell plays the role of a father as many secretly wish to have but do not dare to confess. I look forward to the meeting of these series with a wider audience. It may become a crazy success.

faith and theater (Film: Jésus de Montréal – Denys Arcand, 1989)

Made 30 years ago, ‘Jesus of Montreal‘ is one of those films upon which time seems to have passed without a trace. The movie was created by director Denys Arcand and it is likely that the recent launching on-screens of his ‘The Fall of the American Empire‘ has led to the re-screening of some of his older films at our local cinematheque. The original theme and the interesting structure of his 1989 film shows that Arcand is one of those directors consistent with the art and messages of his films, pursuing quality and waiting to gather enough material, substance and emotion before involving himself into a new project. In the three decades that have passed since ‘Jesus of Montreal‘ was made, the Quebec film maker directed less than ten movies, but each one is special, is worth seeing and invites debates.

The enacting of the Passion is part of the Christian tradition in many places around the world. It is a story about faith and love, about suffering and redomption, which lends itself well to theatrical performances, and ‘Jesus of Montreal‘ is built around such a performance in Montreal in 1989. The modern city is always in the background. Invited by the local priest, a team of actors and its director enter, with talent and passion, in the roles of the New Testament drama, creating an event that resonates in the souls of the spectators. The well-documented and modern vision created by the director, brings to the hills that dominate the city the old story with its historical and human truth, however, the show starts to disturb despite or perhaps due to success. The church authorities consider it too daring, the show-business world is trying to turn it into a source of profit, and during this time the actors begin to pay the price of their passion for theater and of their spiritual involvement in the enacting of the story in the Bible.

The religious and artistic messages of the film reach the viewers. The script is cleverly written, the characters are alive on the screen, drawn from a few replicas each, but still real and expressive. The film talks about the passion for the art of theater and about the state of faith in the corrupt and mercantile world of the late 20th century. Faith lives on, but Jesus can die many times in many ways and salvation is possible in multiple forms. Denys Arcand builds his film by sprinkling it with symbols from the Passion, both through scenes inspired by the Biblical parables but also through expressive visual elements. The team of actors does a wonderful job, especially Lothaire Bluteau in the lead role. ‘Jesus of Montreal‘ is a film that induces emotion and engages its viewers.

sexual harassment in the newsroom (Film: Bombshell – Jay Roach, 2019)

The American presidential elections years are good opportunities for political films. Documentaries or fiction films released in these years have addressed different aspects of the political system, and the American and international audiences have extended their attention already alerted by the election campaigns that extend over the full year prior to the election to the related movies on the screens. It is still too early to say whether 2020 will bring more significant films in this category, but I believe I can point out that ‘Bombshell‘ written by Charles Randolph and directed by Jay Roach, released on screen in December 2019, is one of the first of its kind this season. It could be objected that the film is not about politicians but about TV studios, but I think that the objection can be dismissed from start. Televisions have become an active participant in political games in the United States and other parts of the world – particularly news and commentary TV channels that broadcast 24 hours a day of politics such as Fox News. The story in ‘Bombshell‘ is happening in the summer of 2016 and the American presidential election campaign that resulted in the election of Donald Trump as president is always in the background. But the main topic is the sexual harassment scandals that have been in the forefront of public attention since 2016 until today. The fall of Fox News’ all-powerful programs director, Roger Ailes, was the first heavily publicized case of what would become the #MeToo movement starting with the spring of 2017.

The script is trying to reconstruct as realistically and truthfully as possible the atmosphere and activities of the Fox News network in June and July 2016. Three characters, three women who all work at Fox, two of them real characters and well-known names for television fans (Megin Kelly played by Charlize Theron and Gretchen Carlson played by Nicole Kidman) and the third imaginary character (young reporter Kayla Pospisil – Margot Robbie) face the sexual advances of the all-powerful studio chief executive Roger Ailes (played by John Lithgow) within the sexist atmosphere and the corporate privacy rules that were protecting the powerful. Fox News did not invent news television as entertainment, but under Ailes’s leadership, it had created a combination of conservative policy and use of attractive female presenters and journalists to increase audience and ratings. The mantra “television is a visual media” was hiding a sexist attitude and criteria for promoting those who received time on the network screens. When Carlson, fallen into disgrace and fired, decides to publicly disclose what is happening behind the scenes, the entire corporation puts in march its machinery to protect the business. The script follows the weeks in which Ailes’ female victims gather their moral forces to overcome the personal traumas and the possible consequences for their careers, and publicly disclose, what happened to each one of them, joining the collective action.

Can films like ‘Bombshell‘ be judged and appreciated outside their political contexts? It ain’t easy. This film is a mosaic of political fiction inspired by real events, mixing real and imaginary characters and the personal drama of women who want to build a career in television journalism and who are facing sexual harassment in a corporate atmosphere dominated by sexism, led and controlled by men. It is an American story of the 21st century, in which the lone heroes (women in this case) fight for justice, but their chances of success are real only if they join forces and collaborate with each other to win the battle with the system and to reveal the truth. Director Jay Roach who has directed several successful comedies over the last few decades (the ‘Austin Powers’ series or family comedies like ‘Meet the Fockers’) completely abandons the tools of humor for an alert docu-drama style that exactly mimics the style of the shows in the TV studios where the action takes place. The result is interesting to those who know Kelly, Carslon or O’Reilly, but I don’t think it’s always clear to those who are unfamiliar with Fox News and its anchors. The imaginary characters and the individual dramas of the women are the ones that captivated me, and the scene that confronts Margot Robbie‘s Kayla Pospisil with John Lithgow ‘s Roger Ailes was terrifying to me. Each of the women gets to enlist on her way and for her reasons in the fight with the system. ‘Bombshell‘ masterfully uses makeup, and brings in two beautiful actresses, with well-known profiles, who have already played in other films roles in which they have been maked-up to the limits of not being recognized. Of the two of them I think Charlize Theron is the one who manages a great creation, melting into the role of Megin Kelly. Nicole Kidman‘s Carlson seemed to me a little stiff. The performance of John Lithgow, an actor I love and appreciate very much – also helped by a very successful makeup – was amazing. I will not skip mentioning the excellent Malcolm McDowell in the small but important role of Rupert Murdoch. ‘Bombshell‘ has its ups and downs, it is a film that addresses a painful topic and I believe others will follow in its footsteps. Finally, it is a film that will leave few people indifferent, same as the Fox News programs.

CHANGE.WORLD: Noutăți despre Leonardo

film noir under the African sun (film: Coup de torchon – Bertrand Tavernier, 1981)

Before the Coen brothers and Quentin Tarantino, on the other side of the Atlantic, there was Bertrand Tavernier. ‘Coup de torchon‘ (English title ‘Clean Slate‘) was made in 1981, the year Tarantino had just finished high school and three years before the Coen brothers made their first feature film. The movie is a screen adaptation of a thriller authored by an American writer named Jim Thompson, who is almost forgotten today but who in the 50s, 60s and 70s was considered the equal of Dashiel Hammett or Raymond Chandler, and who had collaborated as a screenwriter on Stanley Kubrick‘s first films, among the exceptional ‘Paths of Glory‘, one of the best anti-war films ever made. Bertrand Tavernier moves the story from a small town with 1280 inhabitants (hence the title of the book ‘Pop. 1280’) in the American South haunted by crisis and racism to a French colony in Africa in 1938, the year before the outbreak of WWII. I didn’t read the book, but according to the comments, Tavernier‘s film is Thompson‘s most faithful film adaptation. At the same time, it manages to perfectly describe the atmosphere of colonial France. A ‘film noir’ under the sun of Africa.

Lucien Cordier (Philippe Noiret) is the only policeman in an African village, where the white minority dominates without too many scruples or excuses, because racism is a state policy. He seems like a pretty decent guy. Offenses committed by whites, whether poaching or pimping, are forgotten with a pinch of corruption. Laws do not have much value in a fundamentally unjust society, but even if the policeman wants to defend the laws, he cannot do much because he is kind of a sucker. Everyone is making fun of him – the bosses, the local villains, his wife who cheats on him with a much younger gigolo. When, exasperated, he asks the advice of the superiors, they vaguely advise him to impose himself and start a clean slate. Taking the advice seriously, Cordier triggers a series of events that honor a film noir. But under the hot sky of Africa everything seems relative, including morals, including the value of human lives. Can crime be a way to salvation, as the hero of the film seems to believe?

Philippe Noiret performs in ‘Coup de torchon‘ another one of his exceptional roles from that peak period of his career. The victim becoming an executioner is a typical ‘film noir’ character, but Tavernier and Noiret add to the character new dimensions and a welcome ambiguity. Our hero seems starts as a vigilante, but then he starts to enjoy crimes and the power of the man holding the gun. Nor does the seemingly reparation erotic liaison with Rose (Isabelle Huppert) have the chance to bring sanity back to his mind. Once slipped on the crime down spiral, returning is no longer possible. Everything happens under the bright light and hot sun of Africa, an atmosphere apparently opposite to what we are used to in films of this genre, but this cinematography only amplifies the horror effect. The final of the film is marked by the beginning of the Second World War, that is, of the times in which killing becomes a patriotic duty.

a remake which is a classic (film: Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht / Nosferatu the Vampyre – Werner Herzog, 1979)

1979 was a wonderful year for Dracula. No less than 5 films were made that year, inspired by Bram Stoker’s character, and having as main hero either Dracula himself or one of his descendants. Of all, the most remarkable is ‘Nosferatu: Phantom der Nacht‘ directed by Werner Herzog, probably one of the best films out of the nearly 200 Dracula-related movies listed by IMDB. Here’s a character who can be said to have become a movie genre. The English title is ‘Nosferatu the Vampyre‘ – notice the misspelling, Tarantino didn’t invent anything with his ‘basterds’. The film pays homage to F.W. Murnau‘s other great German ‘Nosferatu‘ from 1922, but its tone is different, using the story already known to speak to the modern viewers about the roots of horror and evil. Rare are the cases where a ‘remake’ is approaching or even equaling the original. This is one of them.

Today’s viewers of the film have two alternatives. If they have recently seen or seen again Murnau‘s film, they will recognize many quotes and will take delight in examining and discussing the differences from the classic version or from Stoker’s novel. However, this is not mandatory. Werner Herzog‘s film ‘stands on its own’ as a stand-alone work, one of the most interesting horror films ever made, which also offers an excellent opportunity for some exceptional acting. Herzog and Klaus Kinski‘s Dracula is a lonely damned man who is ready to sacrifice his eternity for a few moments of tenderness. Isabelle Adjani besides talent has the perfect physique for the role of female victim in horror films. I always see with pleasure and thrill (artistic, not of horror) Bruno Ganz, and the role of Jonathan Harker, one of first half of a remarkable career , did not disappoint me. Finally, viewers will hardly forget the interpretation of Roland Topor, who brings in this film something of the style of German classic films, which is all the more remarkable for this Frenchman of Jewish origin, an artist with a biography as interesting as the film itself. Using non-professional actors to interpret the peasants and the Roma encountered by Jonathan along the road added authenticity.

‘Nosferatu the Vampyre‘ is a great film from the cinematography point of view, although it was produced and filmed with modest means and with a small technical team, like many of the German films of the 1970s. The nature filmed by Werner Herzog is threatening, with dark colors and covered with mists. The castle scenes masterfully use the labyrinths, cellars and stone walls of a medieval fortress. The city, with its neat houses filmed in the dark of night or in a metallic daylight, seems to hide behind every corner terrible dangers for its bourgeois inhabitants. Animals also play an important role, making us forget that Herzog used in those times when computers were not yet involved in the creation of movie graphics a few procedures for which today the animal protection societies would have sued him. A final recommendation – pay close attention to the generic. There are a few minutes of exceptional cinematography here, although not directly linked to the action, and in addition, there are no credits in the end. The movie ends without being marked with ‘Ende’. Or maybe it doesn’t end.
