I confess that I am not a big fan of Claude Lelouch. The cinematic aesthetic of his movies from the 70’s were reminding me of illustrated magazines with glossy pages and photos of celebrities on the covers, beautifully printed and sparkly colored but a bit empty of content. From that moment on, I stopped watching his movies. ‘Il y a des jours … et des lunes‘ (the English title is ‘There Were Days … and Moons‘), made in 1990, was a pleasant surprise for me. I decided to see it because of the presence in the cast of an impressive number of well-known French actors, and I was immediately captivated by the original idea and the interesting concept. It is not clear to me why this film is not better known, commented and debated in the context of Lelouch‘s filmography and other films with similar themes.

From the very first scene, Anouk Aimée‘s off-screen voice announces that one of the film’s heroes will die in less than 24 hours. There are many candidates, in a human mosaic and a multitude of events that take time to form and find their place in the structure of the film. We are dealing with couples who are falling apart after many years or just a day after the wedding, with single men and women who met the wrong men, with a depressed singer and a truckload driver stressed by his boss, with a priest who is in love with a pianist and a little girl who observes everything and asks about everything, with police officers who drive over the legal speed and with traveling actors. A whole world that seems to be in chaos, but actually finds itself under astral signs – the full moon and the penultimate solar eclipse of the 20th century, combined with the transition from winter to summer time. Is the fate of all these people predestined? Will their paths converge to the same place and at the hour doomed to be fatal for one of them?

I liked many things in this movie, especially the way the stories unfold in parallel and the pace of the action accompanied and marked by an excellent soundtrack. The charm of the film lies in the humanity of the collection of small and diverse stories, presented with empathy and understanding. Not all the characters are well defined, some of them are perhaps even redundant and could have been omitted at editing to make the ensemble a little shorter, simpler and more clear, but the formula works. Made in 1990, ‘There Were Days … and Moons‘ was one of the first films to approach in a new-wave-ish manner the theme of astral signs guiding the destinies of heroes, and is also among the first films that use traffic jams on the highways as a framework for unexpected encounters and conflicts of the modern world. I believe it’s a movie worth watching (or re-watching) and discussing.

CHANGE.WORLD: Viitor și izolare

the next Daniel Craig series? (film: Knives Out – Rian Johnson, 2019)

‘Knives Out‘ uses the ‘whodunit’ formula that enjoyed great success about half a century ago: complex police intrigues based on novels written by Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie or in the style of the British masters of the detective genre, stories that usually take place in a confined space (even if sometimes this space is moving – trains or cruise ships for example), having as main heroes super-intelligent detectives, also armed with a mandatory sense of humor. These films usually gathered remarkable distributions with screen celebrities happy to recite the lines of the suspects in the crimes, because another rule of the genre makes a suspect from almost all the characters. The genre has been abandoned for several decades, but was recently resurrected by Kenneth Branagh and now by Rian Johnson. ‘Knives Out‘ was released in the US on Thanksgiving 2019, was in theaters during the holiday season between 2019 and 2020, and is now one of the stars of home streaming or VOD viewing. I had planned to watch it in the theaters, but I kept postponing, giving priority to Oscar-nominated films … and then the world stopped. I watched it now in my living room at home, and I think that it suits well the need of escapist entertainment in the days of Corona.

The story and characters fit quite well into the patterns defined almost a century ago by Agatha Christie’s novels, although the story is set somewhere in the nowadays US. The highly successful detective novelist (played by Christopher Plummer) who does not survive the night after his 85th birthday could be a male version of the British novelist. Is his death a suicide or a murder? Around him gathers a family of nullities, typical for the American new riches class, all of them potential suspects with enough reasons to kill, and a naive and devoted nurse (Ana de Armas) who seems so innocent that we can bet she will quickly become the main suspect. The cast also includes some well-known names and figures, the most notable of all being Jamie Lee Curtis. Of course, the lion’s slice (or role) belongs to Daniel Craig, who simulates a ridiculous accent, criticized by many who forget that the immortal Poirot spoke with an accent at least as ridiculous. There is also a social message in the film, more than insinuated by the crisp social differentiation of the American bourgeois class from the class of immigrant servants – a message discreetly dosed, a bit schematic and a bit demonstrative, but without upsetting it is also carried in a satirical envelope.

The plot is confusing enough that in the end not all the details are completely elucidated. No problem, I’m sure Detective Benoit Blanc figured it all out. ‘Knives Out‘ has enough spirited dialogues and other humorous details that make it an escapist entertainment just as the times require. I don’t want to forget to mention the sets that seemed very well designed, with a voluptuousness of the agglomeration of objects, some of which will also play a role in the plot. Rian Johnson came to this film after directing the penultimate episode of ‘Star Wars’. Daniel Craig is wrapping up his part in the endless series of James Bond movies. Both came to ‘Knives Out‘ with the visible intention of relaxing and making something different, but without leaving the space of the crowd pleasers. They both seem to have had a great time making this movie. Now the only question is whether what we saw is the first series in the adventures of Detective Benoit Blanc, the future film series starring Daniel Craig.

horror near The Wall (film: Possession – Andrzej Zulawski, 1981)

The beauty of the cinema universe is that it is big enough to allow exploration and even discoveries. I confess that I knew nothing about the Polish director Andrzej Zulawski. His 1981 film ‘Possession‘ was waiting for me for a while to watch, and the surprise was huge. Here is a strong and original film-maker from the country of Wajda and Polanski, a little younger than them, whose work I completely ignored. ‘Possession’ is a daring, violent, challenging work, which shocked the audiences at its release. It was mis-categorized because it refuses standing in a defined shelve as Zulawski juggles with the genres. It anticipates trends that would be visible but not completed accepted even decades later. It includes many hidden corners and secret ciphers that can be decrypted only by references to the personal biography of the director. It is no easy watching, not only because of the large amount of shocking visuals but also because Zulawski does not like and does not care to explain everything that he shows on the screen. He relies on us, the viewers, to be smart enough and to fill in the missing with our own pieces of imagination. Or of horror.

‘Possession’ begins as a film about a falling apart marriage. We are still less than a decade since ‘Scenes from a Marriage‘ and ‘Kramer vs. Kramer‘ were made. But we immediately realize that the separation between the businessman (or maybe the spy) Mark (Sam Neill) and his beautiful wife Anna (Isabelle Adjani) will not be an easy separation, that behind the seemingly trivial reasons (the suspicion of infidelity of the wife) there is something much more evil about Anna’s personality and the forces that have taken over her. The story quickly slips into violence but especially into the supernatural, and I will say no more here than that Zulawski used in this film the services of Carlo Rambaldi, the creator of aliens and monsters who contributed to the ‘look’ of some movies like ‘E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial‘, ‘Alien‘, ‘Dune‘ and ‘King Kong Lives‘. Isabelle Adjani creates one of the most intense roles of her career in this film. I hope that the information about her suicide attempt at the end of the filming was just a rumor, but I’m not surprised. I confess that Sam Neill was not on my list of favorites so far, but his creation in this film has greatly increased his rating. I need to mention also the German actor Heinz Bennent, who had already starred in films by Bergman and Truffaut, in an ambiguous and memorable role of the lover who completes the triangle.

I think that ‘Possession’ is a film that cannot be fully understood without references to the personal biography of its director. Zulawski himself had gone through a traumatic divorce, and seems to be exorcising his feelings through shocking scenes and images belonging to the extremes of the horror film repertoire. However, the Devil is also present under another incarnation in the film. It took me a while to realize that the action was taking place in the divided Berlin during the Cold War. The presence of evil is explicit in the horror scenes and implicit in the location, the apartment where most of the horrors take place being placed right next to the Wall, overlooking the communist world that Zulawski had to leave to create in freedom. The production is international, the film takes place and is filmed in Berlin by a Polish director, the main heroes are actors from France and Australia, and the biggest admirer is the Italian Dario Argento, who I think would have signed the film without hesitation. ‘Possession’ is a film that gains in historical perspective. Today’s viewer can see in it a forerunner (but not a much more delicate one) of extreme productions like Lars von Trier‘s ‘Antichrist‘. For those who are not afraid of violence on screen, it is also an original combination between art cinema and the horror genre.

realism and surrealism (film: Biutiful – Alejandro G. Iñárritu, 2010)

The films directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu are never trivial. Viewers can always expect unique perspectives and original cinematic visions. ‘Biutiful‘ released on screens in 2010 is a good example. It is a realistic film with a strong social touch, perhaps the most political film of Iñárritu so far, addressing a theme, that of illegal immigrants, which would become a major subject of public interest only a few years later. At the same time, it is a film in which the fantastic and the supernatural play an important role. The film also contains naturalism and poetry, but shrouded in a gloomy vision, dominated by death. Death, however, is not necessarily a final, but only the end of a cycle. Others will follow after the screening is over. The hero of the film will accompany us for a while.

‘Biutiful‘ is the story of the last months of a man’s life, Uxbal (Javier Bardem) who is far from being a saint or an exemplary citizen. The story takes place in Barcelona, but the tourist part of the city, which many of us know, we only see in passing. The heroes of the film are immigrants (many of them illegal) from Africa or China, their exploiters from the underworld, corrupt police officers. Uxbal himself is a kind of intermediary and coordinator of the activity of illegal workshops in which Chinese immigrants work in abject conditions to manufacture the colored forgeries that African street vendors sell to tourists. His life is already burdened by a failed marriage and the care for his two children who grow up in a precarious material and moral atmosphere, when he is struck by the news that he is ill and that he came too late for treatment to save his life. This is a theme addressed in many other films, but the perspective is unique here, because Uxbal is already, perhaps since always in dialogue with death. He had never met his father, who had left Franco’s Spain before he was born and died in exile in Mexico, but his presence always accompanies him. He also has the power to communicate with the dead as long as their souls are still around the bodies that temporarily housed them. He gets his own support from a woman, a fortune teller who facilitates his dialogue with the other dimension. There is a super-reality beyond the reality described in the film and the boundaries between the two worlds are permeable for the film’s hero.

The film is undoubtedly dominated by the acting creation of Javier Bardem. His hero is a small mobster in a bad world, but within this social limitations he tries to help those around him. But his attempts generally fail and some of them end in tragedy. The events that the hero experiences are depressing, but still the film has a positive message, which derives precisely from the inner light, from the desire to do good against all adversity and the ugliness of the world. Perhaps it is precisely in the knowledge or belief that the universe is not limited by social conditions or geographical space, and not even by death, that Uxbal’s power lies. Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu manages to create this impression of super-reality above or beyond a very cruel immediate reality, but the spectators must be attentive. They will find these fantastic elements in the symmetrical scenes that open and close the film or through visual details that occupy only one corner of the screen for a split second. The urban landscape is also part of a universe that extends far, far away, with landscapes filled by frozen forests or under a sky where flocks of birds live their own lives and cycles. ‘Biutiful‘ is not an easy movie to watch, the topics covered are heavy and painful, but there is also a lot of beauty and a dose of fantasy that is worth looking for and experiencing.

CHANGE.WORLD: Știința în slujba Răului

(sursa imaginii: philatelia.net/cat6/stamps/?id=1188)

an Israeli Me Too story (film: Working Woman – Michal Aviad, 2018)

‘Working Woman‘, released in 2018, belongs to the category of films addressing the delicate and painful problem of sexual harassment, films that probably waited a long time to be made, and which the Me Too movement and its famous cases made possible or in any case hastened their making and launching. Director Michal Aviad is not among the well-known names in Israeli cinema, ‘Working Woman‘ being only her second feature film. Most of the other titles in her filmography are documentaries or television films about women, their role in the history of Israel and their position in society. Thematically, therefore, ‘Working Woman‘ falls along the same lines, but the professional tools are those of fiction. In addition to the emotional charge, Michal Aviad achieves something more – the film is very much rooted in the Israeli reality but also has a degree of generality in approach that makes it accessible and relevant to audiences in many other places in the world.

It is worth mentioning that Israel was not spared its own famous cases of sexual harassment, some of them enjoying extensive media coverage and involving personalities from the highest spheres of public and political life. There also were trials and deserved punishments. Some of them have happened in previous decades, but as everywhere in the world, more have been brought to the attention of public opinion in the post-Harvey Weinstein era. However, Michal Aviad and the co-authors of the script chose to tell the story of an anonymous Israeli middle-class woman, a story that has probably happened countless times in today’s Israel. Orna, the mother of three children, whose husband is the owner of a restaurant business that did yet take off, is hired by a construction contractor on the basis of a vague protection – Benny, the owner of the company, had been her commanding officer in the army. She is smart and efficient, she succeeds in her work, but she soon begins to understand that Benny is not only interested in her personal performance. The balance of power between them is unfortunately very widespread in the macho Israeli society. Many men holding positions of command starting from the army and continuing at work, impose on women relationships that start with allusions and too often turn into harassment and even sexual assault. The film describes the degradation of the relationship between Orna and Benny from the woman’s point of view, the escalation of harassment, the transformation of the young woman’s professional and personal life into an unbearable nightmare.

The main problem of the film is in my opinion the linear, predictable, almost didactic script. Starting from the good intentions to expose the problem as completely as possible, the authors introduced in the story all the warning signs and then the stages of the degradation of the relationship between Orna and Benny. The exposition is effective but the narrative structure is too predictable, at least in the first two thirds of the script. The ending changes the approach but creates another discussion, the solution being personal and not systemic. But this also happens many times in life. Fortunately, these shortcomings are offset by the particularly successful interpretations of the two actors who assume the main roles. Liron Ben-Shlush enters the role of Orna with courage and sensitivity, living on the screen the trauma of her character, the courage and dignity that allow her to fight for economic survival, personal safety and family integrity. Menashe Noy in the role of the man who imagines that anything is allowed due to his social and economic status, manages to reveal without excusing the psychology of his character. The deep psychological understanding and the attention to details of director Michal Aviad make the cinematic experience of watching this film perfectly credible for Israeli viewers and relevant for viewers from anywhere.

Hitchcock at the theater (film: Dial M for Murder – Alfred Hitchcock, 1954)

In the book of dialogues between François Truffaut and Alfred Hitchcock, the master of thrillers states that he does not think there would be much to discuss about ‘Dial M for Murder‘. Truffaut contradicts him immediately and rightly so. ‘Dial M for Murder‘ is a special film in Alfred Hitchcock‘s filmography, the adaptation of a theater play, a seemingly trivial film and which has many reasons to be strongly marked by the 67 years since it was filmed. And yet, even for the contemporary viewer, this film offers many reasons for interest and satisfaction. The main reason is that Hitchcock does not hesitate to look for and invent the most appropriate means to tell the story and create suspense, turning the interesting but quite conventional detective plot into a significant theatrical and cinematic experiment.

The screenplay is written by Frederick Knott who adapts his own text that was successful on stage in London. It was originally a script for the BBC and has all the characteristics of the genre – a complex plot, a dramatic structure based largely on dialogues between smart criminals and equally smart cops, who play sophisticated games of cat and mouse, full of traps and brilliant reasoning. The story seems simple. A man discovers that his beautiful wife is cheating on him and plans to assassinate her. He hires a paid assassin through blackmail, but his plans to commit a perfect crime fail, as do any plans to commit a perfect crime. The main heroine survives the attack but gets into big trouble, like all Hitchcock heroines. I will not write any more details leaving you the pleasure of discovering the plot and the solution by yourself, but I will warn you that things are much more complicated than they seem, and the road to revealing the truth will be long, a road sprinkled with surprises for the viewers.

As always in Hitchcock‘s movies, it is interesting to watch what happens on screen and also how Hitchcock presents what happens on screen. The master director never hides the fact that he is adapting a play. Most of the story takes place in the London couple’s apartment, and the view is that of the spectator in the spectator’s armchair. I don’t remember whether we ever see the fourth wall of the room. However, the perspective is far from static, and that is why we never have any feeling of claustrophobia, or the impression that we are witnessing a filmed theater show. Hitchcock experiments a lot of new tricks in this film, from 3D cinematography or unusual filming angles, sometimes raising his camera to the height of the roof of the house, other times placing it on the floor. He also uses the technique of oversized objects to exaggerate perspectives at a time when computerized special effects where not yet even dreamed of. Dimitri Tiomkin‘s music dramatically accompanies the action and is one of the best in Hitchcock‘s films. Grace Kelly‘s acting performance (in the first of her three collaborations with Hitchcock) is remarkable, she is beautiful and charismatic, and Robert Robert Burks‘ camera follows her with devotion and admiration. Among her male partners, Ray Milland honorably plays the role of the cheating and vengeful husband, while John Williams fits well into the role (and the overcoat) of the police inspector. Excessive verbosity may sound very artificial to today’s viewers, but at Hitchcock the text, music and image combine to provide the multimedia cinematic experience. The entertainment in this case is of good quality.

alternative history (TV series: The Plot Against America – PhilipRoth, 2020)

I’ve been waiting for this movie or series for about 15 years. Philip Roth is one of my favorite writers and from the moment I read ‘The Plot Against America‘ I visualized the film in my imagination and I knew that someone would come to make it. Roth‘s book is his last great novel. It was followed by four more (the cycle ‘Nemesis’), which are more personal meditations on life, old age, death, far from the scope of this book. ‘The Plot Against America’ instead belongs to a popular genre (alternative historical fiction), has a solid narrative structure and suspense, and a social and political message that remains valid for much of American history of the last century until the present. Paradoxically, it is the least Roth-esque novel of Roth and at the same time the book with the clearest autobiographical touch, the writer himself being one of the heroes of the book, as a boy at the age of 7 to 9. The HBO series largely met expectations. I can’t say I heard Roth‘s ‘voice’ in the movie as when reading the book, but that’s not what I was looking for. On the other hand, I experienced a dense, authentic cinematic version, with political and emotional impact, of the topic approached by the novel. Some of the characters have a different weight than the one in the book, but paradoxically, for the better, being developed intelligently and interestingly. The format chosen by the producers (a mini-series of 6 episodes) was appropriate, with an excellent final episode, even if it offers an ending that is a debatable variant of the one in the book.

Philip Roth’s novel includes a well-articulated warning about the dangers of the encounter between ethnic and racial prejudice and populism in the American political system. The book was written at the beginning of the millennium, and does not imply any direct reference to the immediate American political reality, intending to be more general and metaphorical than the solution chosen in the screenplay. There is a tension in this production between a few direct references that borrow words from contemporary political discourse and the precise location of the action in the early 1940s in a Jewish-populated district in New Jersey. The alternative historical fiction that describes Charles Lindberg’s conquest of power in 1940, and America’s reorientation toward an isolationist policy and sympathizing with Nazi Germany followed by gradual adoption of anti-Jewish policies, includes a clear dystopian note about the fragility of democratic systems. Philip Roth appears in the credits as a producer and he was consulted in the initial discussions related to this project, but the political nuances and the imagined ending no longer belong to him. We can only speculate whether he would have agreed or not. To me, the historical part and the one related to the identity dilemmas and conflicts within the Jewish community seemed to me the best made and most authentic. However, I accept that other viewers may conclude differently after watching the six episodes.

Ed Burns and David Simon, the creators of ‘The Plot Against America’ are the authors ‘The Wire‘ which in my opinion is to this day the best series ever created by HBO. Their achievement here is close to the same high level of quality. America and New Jersey in the years 1940-1942 are unfolding before our eyes. The Jewish community and the people belonging to it, the identity conflicts that exist in almost every such group in the Jewish Diaspora, the diverse individual responses to political developments and social and economic threats from outside are excellently rendered. Some of the acting performances are exceptional. Herman Levin (played by Morgan Spector) is a father who evolves from a deep trust in American values and institutions to a late awareness of the totalitarian degradation that is happening around him and the fact that the system betrays him. His wife Bess is his partner in this evolution, which offers to Zoe Kazan the opportunity for perhaps the most memorable role in the series and in her career so far, that of a Jewish mother who fights the external pressures and the centrifugal tendencies in the family. Her sister Evelyn (Winona Ryder) and Rabbi Bengelsdorf (John Turturro) represent that part of American Jewry willing to go much further on the path of compromise, blinded and later deceived by the demagoguery of the politicians, avoiding any form of resistance and confrontation, endangering the whole community and finally themselves. The combination of fictional and documentary scenes, including newsreels, newspapers and radio shows, is perfect. The story flows smoothly, with rhythm and suspense, and there is enough time for both action and character development. The series ‘The Plot Against America‘ has some debatable moments and aspects, but overall it is an impressive achievement, a production that invites reflection and debate.

the alternative underworld (Film: Subway – Luc Besson, 1995)

High-speed trains, stations lighted or in dark, crowded or deserted, underground tunnels and the mazes of the subway networks have long been an ideal space for interesting films and especially for quality thrillers, from his Larry Peerce‘s ‘The Incident‘ from 1967 until ‘Kontroll‘ by the Hungarian director Nimród Antal made in 2003. ‘Subway‘ made in 1985 by Luc Besson fits well in this good company. It was only the second feature film of the French director made when he was only 26 years old, but we can already find here many of the creative and original features, the pace, the audacity, and a degree of disregard for the social and cinematic norms that they would make him one of the important names of French and international cinema in the coming decades.

Luc Besson takes a story not too original and does not do too much to develop it beyond the basic premises. We don’t have too much psychology in this movie, its story and the characters don’t offer too many interesting things at first glance. An occasional burglar breaks a safe deposit when invited at a high bourgeoisie party, a young and beautiful rich woman gets tired of her tycoon and gangster husband and of the hypocritical conventions of the upper classes and looks for something else, the two will be chased by a police commissioner who seems to have come from other French police films and his incompetent subordinates, competing with a gang of gangsters incompetent as well. What is different is the setting in which the action takes place, which is for the most part the seemingly infinite maze of underground Paris. This was, in fact, the space in which the story of many books (signed among others by Victor Hugo, Alexandre Dumas, Gerard de Nerval, Gaston Leroux) and some films inspired by these books takes place, but here we are dealing with an underground world invaded by the modernity and the technology of the 80’s. And yet, this is a different and contrasting world than the one ‘above’, where many unexpected things are possible from love stories to the formation of musical groups. Dangers, violence, tragedies are not lacking either.

Viewers who will focus on the way the film is made and the colorful characters that populate the underworld will find plenty of reasons of satisfaction in the ‘Subway‘. The film begins with a spectacular pursuit that seems to belong to Luc Besson‘s later films, but continues underground, where cinematography and scenery create the feeling of dynamic claustrophobia accompanying the entire film. Isabelle Adjani is gorgeous, a bleak beauty looking for an alternative to a glittering but empty of content life. Christopher Lambert has the most remarkable performance in this film, a role very different from others in his career. I also was delighted by the presence of Jean Reno in an original role that precedes his fame and by Michel Galabru, a formidable actor whose roles as police commissioner fit him like a glove. Éric Serra‘s music accompanies the film and is part of the action. Luc Besson has managed with ‘Subway‘ not only to make a special and original film, which has enjoyed public success as well, but has also signed a declaration of independence from the film noir or the traditional French action films proving that it is decided to make cinematography his way.
