CHANGE.WORLD: Cum ne pregătim pentru viitoarea catastrofă?

layers of darkness (film: Fleuve noir – Erick Zonca, 2018)

The two lead characters of the film ‘Fleuve noir‘ are confronted with personal dramas and dark psychological problems, each in his own way. Police investigator Visconti carries with him the drama of complicated relationships with his son a teenager who’s in trouble with drug trafickers. He is rarely awake, permanently looking for alcohol, untidy and dressed in a raincoat that rivals that of the legendary Inspector Columbo. The literature teacher Belaille hides behind the appearance of a good teacher and a happy new father hiding unfulfilled writing ambitions and character vices that make him confuse reality with gloomy imaginary fantasies. Director Erick Zonca benefited for this 2018 film from a screenplay based on a book by Israeli crime novelist Dror Mishani and two exceptional actors in the lead roles – Vincent Cassel and Romain Duris. And yet, ‘Fleuve noir‘, despite its ambitions, manages to be only a little less than the sum of the talents that participated in the making of the film.

The story of the film is built around the investigation of the disappearance of a teenager. The elements of the police procedure are not completely absent, but are pushed into the background by the psychological aspects of the investigation. Visconti is a cop who relies primarily on intuition and rummages through the lives of those involved. The results do not take long to appear, but family conflicts, vices and psychological traumas are multiple and are gradually revealed. Repeated surprises and upheavals lead both police officers and spectators astray, and the truth – if this is the truth – is revealed only in the final scene.

The adaptation of the script to the French reality seemed successful to me, and the succession of revelations and changes of views always keeps the interest of the spectators. The excellent cinematography alternates between the police station, the dark and violent streets of Paris at night, the building where the heroes of the drama live, and the forest next to it that plays its role in the drama. The interpretations of Vincent Cassel and Romain Duris seemed a bit exaggerated to me. On a theater stage, they would be perfect, but in the film it seemed to me that the characters were embodied with an excess of mannerism, and it is precisely the key scenes in which the obsessed policeman and the suspected teacher who has many things to hide meet that do not work very well. The surprise character is played by Sandrine Kiberlaine, an actress who lives with more discretion the personal traumas of the mother of the teenager who disappeared and is searched by the police, traumas that are no less profound than those of the policeman or the teacher. The series of successive endings and the acting will make the heroes of this dark psychological thriller continue to haunt us even after the end of the screening.

for Belmondo and Morricone (film: Le professionel – Jean-Paul Belmondo, 1981)

Ennio Morricone left this world recently and these days the movie channels broadcast – probably not by coincidence – many films in which the music is composed by him. It is a good opportunity to appreciate the quality of his compositions but also the role that soundtrack plays in creating the atmosphere and emphasizing certain aspects of the narrative in movies. ‘Le professionel‘ from 1981, directed by Georges Lautner with dialogues written by Michel Audiard is a good example of this. Morricone‘s music not only comprises one of the musical hits of film history, but also actively participates in pacing the story and balancing the comic and dramatic elements. The other main reason why this film arouses the interest of viewers to this day is of course the presence in the lead role of Jean-Paul Belmondo.

The story. Joss Beaumont (Belmondo), a secret agent with a license to kill, is sent by the the French intelligence services to assassinate the president of an imaginary African dictatorship. His back luck is that by the time he arrives in Africa, a change in government policies takes place and the former bullet-targeted rival becomes a friend who not only needs to be protected, but even his future assassin is offered to him as a gift. Escaped from prison after two years of African hell, Joss returns to Paris with plans for revenge, which include the assassination of the African president during an official visit to France. All the French police and secret services are following him. Only women are his allies – his wife plus two other beauties who would make Agent 007 with his Bond girls jealous. Paris becomes the scene of a duel of intelligence in which our hero always seems to guess in advance the movements of those who who are on his footsteps and spectacular pursuits. Belmondo was also famous for performing many of the risky scenes on his own, putting the stuntmen out of work.

The film manages to be interesting and enjoyable to watch until today, and it is largely the merit of Belmondo, who manages to be charismatic and full of humor even while he plans a cruel but well-deserved revenge. The rest of the cast fulfills its mission with professionalism, with a special mention for Robert Hossein as Commissioner Rosen, Joss’s main rival. Hossein was an excellent actor who always seemed to me not to be cast in the roles that he deserved. The soundtrack also has a dominant role, some of the scenes, especially in the first part of the film, look like ballet numbers performed on Morricone‘s songs. But the fact that the film is largely based on Belmondo‘s personality and Morricone‘s music can be considered a weak point. Some viewers may consider their performances excessive, others may argue that if we remove them there is not much left of this film. Maybe everyone is right. Anyway, as entertainment, I liked ‘Le professionel‘, seen now, 39 years after its launch,.

35 years before The Irishman (film: Once Upon a Time in America – Sergio Leone, 1984)

An almost four hours film saga whose action takes place in the world of the American mob and spreads over several decades. Robert De Niro plays the lead role of a gangster whose career is filled with corpses, robberies, collaborations with corrupt police and large unions, and whose love affairs have no chance to end well. The special effects of cinema make De Niro move smoothly from youth to the age of memories and vice versa, in a narrative structure that uses flashbacks copiously. But no, the film we talk about is not ‘The Irishman‘, and the hero of the film does not belong to the Irish mob but rather to the New York Jewish mob during the Prohibition years. The film we talk about is ‘Once Upon a Time in America‘, made 35 years before Scorsese‘s film, and was the last of seven films directed by Sergio Leone. It’s amazing how this Italian director managed to build a remarkable cinematic opera in just seven films. He may also have been the most American of a non-American film directors.

Obviously, Sergio Leone had the ambition to match the masters of American film on their territory. After succeeding in the western genre, he tackles the saga of mafia families, modeled on Coppola‘s ‘The Godfather‘ whose first series came out a decade earlier. Even if it failed to reach the same level, ‘Once Upon a Time in America‘ is an achievement in many ways. The action takes place in Brooklyn, in the shadow of the famous bridge, and is segmented into three moments: the early 1920s when the neighborhood was an area predominantly populated by Jewish immigrants from Europe, 1933 at the end of the prohibition that enriched the gangs of alcohol traffickers, and 1968 when the neighborhood was transformed and the aging mobsters (those who had survived) were either retired from business or had become rich and entered politics. As in ‘The Godfather‘ and ‘The Irishman‘, the heroes never question the legality or morality of their activities. Crime is a family business, and the issues that concern them are related to family loyalties, to the code of honor of the world of crime, to friendship and to love affairs. Of the five friends who started together their careers in crime as teenagers, only Noodles (Robert De Niro) will try in his own way to stick to the end to the friendship pact concluded in his youth. To what extent does this adherence to the mob moral values compensate for a life of crime that destroys almost everyone around him? This is a question whose answer is left to the spectators.

The film is excellently written and narrated in non-chronological order, but all episodes are linked and explained in a coherent way. (This is true for the full version, I read that there was a short version for screening in theaters much less clear due to bad editing). From the point of view of details, the best rendered are the periods between the two world wars, and especially the first one taking place in the almost exclusively Jewish neighborhood of the 20s. The music is composed by Ennio Morricone whose collaborations with Sergio Leone left behind some of the best movie music scores ever written. Some of the songs are performed by Gheorghe Zamfir, and even if the pan flute is not a Jewish instrument, they integrate well and contribute to the ethnic color of the film. De Niro‘s performance is excellent, the makeup helps him move smoothly from the 1930s to 1968, and the comparison with the role in ‘The Irishman‘ where he was rejuvenated with computer graphics effects is very interesting. James Woods is also very good in the role of Max – Noodles’ friend, accomplice and rival – and the relationship between the two is the emotional axis of the story. We also see in this film the debut of Jennifer Connelly in the role of teenager Deborah, already radiating the beauty and personality of the actress she will become. Even though Sergio Leone failed to achieve Coppola’s cinematic perfection, ‘Once Upon a Time in America‘ is a very good and interesting film, which has survived so far very well the passage of time, and which finds well its place into the category of the great American saga films. Leone would be pleased.

the impossible homecoming (film: Phoenix – Christian Petzold, 2014)

‘Phoenix‘ made by Christian Petzold in 2014 is a seemingly simple film, telling almost linearly a story with only three main characters, but which contains a complexity of ideas and emotions that characterises only films or literary works of high quality. After watching the film I read some reviews and opinions of the viewers on IMDB, almost everyone interpreted differently what we had all seen on the screen, and my personal interpretation is also different from theirs. ‘Phoenix‘ is, I believe, a proof that the subject of the Holocaust is not exhausted in the art of film, that there are still significant aspects and points of view that have not been explored. It is also one of the few films (or books, or other works of art) that explore the complex and explosive theme of the relationship between the German Jews who survived the Holocaust and the country they considered homeland and which during the Nazi period turned for them into a infernal extermination machine.

The story in the film takes place in 1945, shortly after the end of the war. Nelly Lenz (Nina Hoss) and Lene Winter (Nina Kunzendorf), survivors of the hell of the extermination camps, return to Germany. It is the story of an impossible homecoming, to a home that no longer exists. Nelly is completely disfigured and the reparatory surgery she undergoes transforms her to the point that she is no longer recognisable even by her husband Johnny (Ronald Zehrfeld). Is this the true reason? Their reunion is strange. Nelly would like to return to her former life, but this is no longer possible. Johnny seems convinced that Nelly is dead, but he wants to use the woman who looks like Nelly to get her fortune. Nelly decides to play the role of the stranger disguised as herself. A false identity that masks itself in the real identity. But what was left of her identity after the sufferings she had gone through? None of those around seem to be interested in what had happened in the death camps and they express no responsible for the fate of the survivors. Is the return still possible? The relationship between Nelly and Johnny is full of questions, first and foremost about the possibility of returning to normalcy after the atrocities of war, about reconciliation, and about the fight against oblivion.

The quality of the film resides in avoiding rhetoric and melodrama despite the difficult themes that are addressed. The film is designed with the tools of the ‘noir’ film combined with elements from the German films that take place in the cabaret environment. The city of Berlin with its ghostly inhabitants waking up to reality after the war experiences, with the ruins where the cabaret with the symbolic name ‘Phoenix’ becomes the meeting point of the occupants with the locals, are built with attention to detail and filmed expressively. Ronald Zehrfeld gives to his role the necessary dose of ambiguity that allows us to constantly ask ourselves about the truth of amnesia and about his transformation from husband to possible accomplice to cime, from musician to crook. Nina Hoss is extraordinary, her transition from disfigurement to beauty, from trauma to the decision to try the impossible of reconciliation, are interpreted with a wealth of nuances and emotions. The final scene is symbolic and memorable. ‘Phoenix‘ is a film experience, which I recommend to all those interested in the history of Berlin, Germany and Europe, but especially to lovers of good cinema.

CHANGE.WORLD: Formele vieții

– the Extra Terrestrial’.

is this really a Ridley Scott movie? (film: The Counselor – Ridley Scott, 2013)

A commission of inquiry should be set up to determine how it is possible that a film that gathers such a collection of talents as ‘The Counselor‘ can disappoint to such an extent. The director is Ridley Scott the author of ‘Alien‘, ‘Blade Runner‘, ‘Thelma & Louise‘ and ‘Gladiator‘, the screenwriter is the successful novelist Cormac McCarthy at his first original script but the author of the novel that inspired the wonderful ‘No Country for Old Men‘ , and the cast includes Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz, Cameron Diaz, Brad Pitt, Bruno Ganz – each of them a reason to make a film in which they feature a ‘must see’. And yet, this drama that takes place in the world of the cartels of drug traffickers at the border between Mexico and the United States, although well garnished with violence and sex, fails to capture and retain the attention of viewers and leaves an impression of confusion and of a terrible waste of talent.

The ‘counselor’ (Michael Fassbender) is an ambitious lawyer whose name we never know. In the desire to raise his standard of living and to please his beautiful fiancée Laura (Penélope Cruz) he enters the service of the mob that transports drugs on both sides of the border. One of the transports goes wrong and the Counselor will be suspected by the Mexican drug cartel that he is reponsbile. The punishment for traitors is terrible. Moral decay and complicity in crime can only lead to disaster – this would be the not-so-subtle moral of this story.

If the moral intention is obvious, the story is quite complex and could be interesting, but the way it is told makes it unnecessarily cryptic for viewers. The film is difficult to watch, many characters appear and disappear and not all of them have a reason to be on screen, there are no details that link the episodes of the story and give motivation to some of the characters’ actions. I believe that to blame here is the fact that Cormac McCarthy‘s script (he is a valuable novelist, but for the first time a screenwriter) does not seem to have been – surprisingly – advised and corrected by the director to make the film clearer to the public. Maybe there was an intention that escapes me, but the fluidity of the story I was expecting from a director like Ridley Scott is missing. Worse, some of the main characters are reduced to being nothing more than their own stereotypes, including the two gangsters played by Javier Bardem and Brad Pitt. Penélope Cruz is a wasted talent in this film. The same can be said about Bruno Ganz, from whose role it seems that essential parts fell out on the editing table, parts which can be seen only in a special version of the director, but not in the standard distributions. Michael Fassbender copes quite well with the complex role of the Counselor, but I missed something in his interpretation as well, perhaps precisely because the moral of the story is too predictable. The most interesting role is that of Cameron Diaz, who seemed to me the only one who manages to transform Malkina’s character from the gangster girlfriend into the pivot of the whole story. The concentration of talent involved in making this film far exceeds the result.

a story with ghosts (film: Crimson Peak – Guillermo del Toro, 2015)

Any film made by Guillermo del Toro has a visual style that makes it recognizable at a glance, whether it’s a sequence or a ‘still’ photo taken from the film. ‘Crimson Peak ‘ made in 2015 is an excellent example, being perhaps the most ‘del Toro’ of del Toro‘s films. From the point of view of fantasy and visual imagination, the film is excellently designed, which makes it far exceed the average level of vintage horror films. In del Toro‘s filmography, however, this film is not one of his top films. The reason may be that by placing the story in the genre of movies in which ghosts and their relationships with humans play a key role in the action, the director (also a co-author of the script) seems to have borrowed and made the most of all the set effects, but works too little to the supernatural element. Those who see the film will find that the ghosts show up in copious quantities and in impressive appearances, but do not play an important role in the action. To paraphrase a dialogue in the film, it is a story with ghosts, but not a ghost story.

The story begins in the New England of the first years of the 20th century where young heiress and socialite Lucille Sharp (Mia Wasikowska) falls in love with a young Brit inventor Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston) which his father believes to be the wrong man for her. When his father dies a violent death nothing can prevent any longer Lucille to Marry Thomas and move with him and his piano playing sister (Jessica Chastain) to England. Their location is a remote mansion which seems to have witnessed plenty of atrocities that may not be over actually, a fact that the which the ghost-communicating American young woman (did I mention that she has the talent to speak with ghosts?) will face soon. Soon we will be together with the heroes in the middle of a Gothic horror movie.

I have already written about the visual qualities of the film. Guillermo del Toro invented a cinematic world in his films in which people coexist with ghost, spirits and strabfe life forms, in which water and retro technologies play a significant role, in which red is a counterpoint to white, and black and shadows have thousands of different shades. The director directs his actors with professionalism and controls them with precision, completely erasing almost any trace of their personality, melting them into masterfully designed costumes and the extreme feelings of the heroes. We were in a gloomy and violent fairy tale, with a somewhat predictable outcome. With an extra touch of inventiveness and creativity, ‘Crimson Peak ‘ could have been a memorable film.

passenger on the train of life (film: The Passenger / Professione: reporter – Michelangelo Antonioni, 1975)

Michelangelo Antonioni‘s ‘The Passenger‘ or ‘Professione: reporter‘ (the original title) is a case study of a remarkable film by one of the important directors in the history of cinema, a film that changes its meaning and perspective over time, but remains a work of great intensity and quality. Made in 1975, the film has a well-defined place in the film career and in the life of the Italian director. His previous film ‘Chung Kuo – Cina‘ had been a documentary made in China in 1972 in the midst of the cultural revolution period. Although it did not contain any explicit criticism but rather brought to the screen a well-censored version of a reality of which the film crew had seen only a part and was allowed to film even less, the film was not liked by the Chinese censors and – it seems – by Mao himself, as a result being banned in China for three decades. Accused of counter-revolutionary and even fascist tendencies, Antonioni (a man with leftist views) makes after that documentary ‘The Passenger‘, a film about a reporter who decides to change his identity of an objective presenter of reality with that of an arms dealer, involved and sympathetic to revolutionary political movements in central Africa. The name of the film gave rise to different interpretations, but perhaps the most interesting is that of the role of ‘passengers’ that each of us plays from birth to death, and the meaning we give to this journey.

What remains of this film 45 years after its making, and how can it be seen and understood by those who do not know the director’s biography? I tried to do this mental exercise while watching the movie. Probably some of the political details have evolved, but not the essence. African states are still prey to corruption and dictatorial tendencies, and rebellious movements put central authority to the test, being characterized as terrorists or freedom fighters depending on the political orientation of the one who places the label. The job of a journalist is as dangerous now as it was then, and the dilemmas of reporters who are sometimes forced to make concessions in order to obtain material or interviews with political leaders with dubious backgrounds are just as actual. Some of the elements of the story are less temporal. The main hero played by Jack Nicholson assumes the identity of a stranger he had met by chance in Africa and who had died suddenly. This kind of intrigue based on identities switching has been the basis of many thrillers. The reporter who has taken on the false identity of a gun dealer at some point becomes the target of everyone, friends and enemies. His connection with a young woman he met on the roads of Europe (Maria Schneider) is described in a very detached way, we don’t even know the girl’s name. Is this an accidental connection, or a real chance for change? Ultimately, identity means not only the name on the passport but also the feelings and relationships with those around you.

We are in a film by Antonioni, so we can expect lonely and internalized heroes who communicate in few words if any. Visually, the spaces often seem to overwhelm the heroes. The story begins in the Sahara. Deserts are among Antonioni‘s favorite settings. The Spain of the end of the dictatorship (filming happened in 1975, the year of Franco’s death, the story takes place in 1973) is also much less populated than it would become in the following decades and just as burned by a merciless sun. An original element is that of Gaudi’s architectural works in Barcelona. The brilliant Catalan architect was probably less famous then than he is today, otherwise I doubt that a reputable reporter would not have heard of him. The presence of Gaudi’s art in the film offers not only a visual counterpoint to the love story between the reporter and the Girl, but also an allusion to the commitment and passion that underlie his life and his work. The excellent, often multifaceted dialogues are supported by the exceptional performances of Jack Nicholson in one of the significant roles of his early career and by Maria Schneider whose beauty and freshness shine here even more than in ‘Last Tango in Paris‘ . Finally, we have in this film a final anthology scene, which it alone would be sufficient for those who did not see it to immediately look to see the film. It’s one of those scenes that I watch and watch again at any occasion, and about which I can say, ‘that’s why I love movies!’

Breton Revenge Thriller (film: Que la bete meure / This Man Must Die – Claude Chabrol, 1969)

With ‘Que la bete meure‘ (The English title is ‘This Man Must Die‘ and is inspired by a novel by Cecil Day-Lewis, yes, the father of … ) Claude Chabrol ends the decade of his consecration as one of the most talented and prolific French film directors of the second half of the 20th century. He had started the 60s as a New Wave theorist and one of the most daring directors of this current and he ends it as a well-known director and one who is very close if not part of the mainstream. Along the way, he made 15 feature films, most of them thrillers, almost all inspired in one way or another by Alfred Hitchcock‘s films. The master of suspense was not only an idol for the directors of the French New Wave, but he also watched them with interest and he dialogued with them, literally and even artistically. For Chabrol, ‘Que la bete meure‘ marks not only the end of an excellent decade of film directing, but also represents one of his best and most original films.

Most of the story takes place on the Breton shores of the ocean, in the villages and especially on the roads near the cliffs. The film begins with the traumatic intersection of two destinies – a child who returns from picking shells on the ocean shore is killed by a car in a hit-and-run accident. The father, a writer of books for children (Michel Duchaussoy) vowes to dedicate the rest of his life to finding the person responsible for his son’s death and murder him. He entrusts his thoughts of revenge to a personal diary that will play a key role in the story. The private investigation, with a little luck, leads the hero to identify the probable culprit quite quickly, but that the revenge plans turn out to be more complicated than expected. As in many of Chabrol‘s films, we come to know a French bourgeois family in which nothing corresponds to appearances, and in which the hatred of members towards the head of the family comes to resemble the situations in Agatha Christie‘s detective novels in which almost all characters have good reasons to commit the crime. It is a very well written script, with romantic elements, suspense and social criticism, all under the sign of revenge, and which also has the quality of an ending that does not try to solve everything but lets the viewer to choose his favorite interpretation. By the way, the dialogues are written by Chabrol, but the script is inspired by a book by Cecil Day-Lewis, yes, the father off …

Michel Duchaussoy and Caroline Cellier do their jobs well in the role of the vengeful father and of the star actress with whom the writer begins a relationship in order to reach her brother-in-law, the main suspect. As often, however, the negative role is the one that proves to be the most interesting and JJean Yanne eclipses the two, although he enjoys less screen time. The cinematography, as always at Chabrol, is excellent. Beyond the tranquility of the landscapes or in the luxury of bourgeois houses, the dramas are hidden and the tension is ready to erupt at any moment. 51 years after the premiere, the world of ‘Que la bete meure‘ seems much simpler, without mobile phones and the Internet, but the effect is that in their absence we get faster to the essence of the feelings and passions of the characters – and here nothing looks old-fashioned. It is one of Chabrol‘s most carefully designed and best-written films – recommended viewing.
