What a gem is ‘L’emmerdeur‘ (distributed in the Anglophone market as ‘A Pain in the Ass‘), the 85-minute film made in 1973 by Édouard Molinaro. It is a ‘noir’ comedy that catches Lino Ventura at the peak of his popularity built mostly on ‘tough guy’ roles – either gangsters or policemen – and gives the popular singer Jacques Brel the opportunity of his last big screen role (the tenth in only six years of activity as an actor). Both actors discover and use their comic resources to the maximum, in a genre different than the ones audiences know them in, bringing to screen a script full of verve and action written by Francis Veber (based on his own theater play), who would try with much less success a ‘remake’, 35 years later, in his last film as a director.
The story, which takes place in Montpellier, combines marital melodrama with film noir with paid assassins as heroes. Milan is sent to eliminate a witness who is going to reveal the truth about a gangster network at a trial. He rents a room at a hotel overlooking the entrance of the courthouse where the future victim will get out of the car at 2:00 p.m. His bad luck is that in the adjoing room has just checked-in François Pignon, a traveling salesman who tries in vain to arrange a meeting with his wife who left him for her psychiatrist. The desperate Pignon’s suicide attempt may disrupt the assassin’s plans, attracting the attention of the police, who are already on alert. Milan must try to convince Pignon not to kill himself and at the same time fulfill his mission. It won’t be easy.
The impossible combination of Ventura – Brel works perfectly, to the delight of the spectators. It can be said that Ventura is playing a gangster role as he has played in many other films, but this time he is put in situations where he is very very unlucky. Brel borrows mime and comic gags from beloved comedy actors of the period. Veber‘s screenplay is written in such a way that the events happen almost in real time. It is one of the post-Nouvelle Vague influences, the other being the free use of the mobile camera, which takes us into hotel rooms, high up on railings and cornices outside the hotel, or in super-fast car chases, as the hero must be at the scene of the future crime at 2:00 p.m., as I said. Cinematographer Raoul Coutard had already worked with Truffaut, Godard and Costa-Gavras. The result of their collaboration is a film that uses in a professional manner the techniques of the cinematographic avant-garde to create a quality ‘crowd-pleaser’ that passes well the test of half a century that has elapsed since its release.
‘May December‘ (2023) has been compared many times to Ingmar Bergman’s ‘Persona’, and director Todd Haynes, far from denying the influence, has acknowledged and commented on it in several interviews and festivals press conferences. Personally, I think that if we are talking about the thematic complexity and the quality of the cinematic experience, the proportions must be preserved. And yet, there are at least two aspects in which the two films are very similar. In both, it is about two very different women who get to know each other, get closer, begin to merge into each other. The second aspect is related to the number of open and unanswered questions that viewers are left with at the end of viewings. ‘May December‘ is inspired by a true life case, which was both judged by tribunals and in the court of public opinion, being widely publicized. The film not only avoids more or less obvious moral judgments, but in a way reopens the case, asking a number of questions and leaving the viewers to find the answers – if they exist.
The story takes place in 2015. Actress Elizabeth Berry comes to the city of Savannah, Georgia to meet Gracie Atherton-Yoo, a woman who, in 1992, at the age of 36, was convicted of statutory rape due to her relationship with a 13-year-old teenager. The case had caused a sensation in its time, because the woman, married and mother of three children, had become pregnant and then given birth in prison. 22 years later, Gracie lives a seemingly normal life with her husband who has become a mature man, they already have grown children, the youngest about to leave home for college. Elizabeth, an actress trained at Julliard in the spirit of ‘method acting’, investigates the role of Gracie, which she is going to play in a film, trying to understand the motivations and emotions of the person who will become the film character. She talks not only to Gracie but also to the rest of the family – the husband, the children, the ex-husband -, to the neighbors, to those who were connected with the events that happened 22 years before. Gradually, nothing that looked obvious at first glance is certain any longer: neither the quiet life of the family and their social integration, nor the way those around remember the events and position themselves towards those involved, nor even the motivations of the investigating actress.
Even the characters are not what they seem at first glance, and this film shows once again that hasty judgments are useless, especially when it comes to people. The most transparent would seem to be Joe Yoo (played by Charles Melton), the teenager who turns into a man who lives his love story that began when he was 13. But are his calm and stability real? Didn’t the love story that marked his life deprive him of many other experiences, and was the decision to follow his love completely free from constraints? Gracie (Julianne Moore in a role that fits her perfectly and she is totally into it) never seems to accept that the course she’s chosen in life includes any part of blame or responsibility. She is aware that social success is fragile, but rejects any criticism or judgment from the outside. Is her self-confidence fully justified? Last, does Elizabeth (Natalie Portman – smart and expressive in a complex role) really get to know the motivations and emotions of the character she will play in the film? ‘May December‘ speaks volumes about real-life stories that end up in romanticized form on screen. The very representation in a film means a judgment on the part of the filmmakers, the actors and ultimately the viewers. Marcelo Zarvos‘ music is an adaptation and re-orchestration of Michel Legrand’s music for ‘The Go-Between’ directed by Joseph Losey, a film in which a 13-year-old boy also appeared, as an intermediary and confidant of love letters between a man and a woman. Other times, other type of coming to age of the teenager. In ‘May December‘, according to the law, Joe Yoo had been the victim, and Gracie had paid the price with years in prison. A sordid story, or on the contrary, a true love between partners separated by many years in age, the kind of relationship described by the metaphor in the film’s title? The case remains open.
‘Cold Pursuit‘ (2019) is an American remake of a European film – Norwegian in this case – which was called ‘Kraftidioten’ or ‘In Order of Disappearance’ in the English version. In 90% of cases, American remakes are resounding cinematic failures, but I still gave this film a chance, especially because the producers had the interesting idea of inviting two of the lead creators of the Norwegian version – film director Hans Petter Moland and cinematographer Philip Remy Øgaard – to participate in the making the american version. I wrote about the Norwegian original almost ten years ago, when I saw that film which it is a combination in which characters from Tarantino’s films – not very intelligent gangsters with their special sub-culture – evolve in the frozen landscape reminiscent of the Coen brothers’ ‘Fargo’ . The American remake is far from being a disaster, but it does not reach the originality, comedy and tension of the original film. Something from the films of Tarantino and the Coen brothers remained, but we must also add here the brutal action films in which Bruce Willis and lately even Liam Neeson were specialists as a term of comparison and, perhaps, as a source of inspiration.
The premises of the story are the same as in the Norwegian film and in the novel that inspired them, although here they are dispatched in a few minutes, and I am not sure that they would have been clear to me if I had not seen the original film. Nels Coxman is a snowplow driver in the Rockies, near Denver. His son, who works at the local airport, falls victim to a mistaken identity and is kidnapped and killed by a gang of drug dealers, who try to disguise the crime as a death by drug overdose. The police hurry to close the case, but Coxman does not believe that his son was using drugs and begins to investigate the circumstances of the death. He quickly reaches those directly involved and, having no more confidence in the justice system, he does not hesitate to liquidate them. His favorite weapon is a carbine whose barrel he had cut and his favorite means of transport in the middle of winter is his snowplow. After liquidating the first batch of criminals, he aims to reach the one who sent them in their criminal actions, the head of a gang of traffickers who control a large part of the city. In a short time he will find himself involved in the wars between gangster gangs. The number of corpses increases, each time marked by a mortuary symbol, like a cinematic tombstone.
I confess that I have never been a big fan of Liam Neeson and even less of his roles in action movies, usually as a worried or grieving father. In ‘Cold Pursuit‘ he plays another such role and there is nothing in to make me change opinion. Laura Dern appears at the beginning of the film as the wife of the hero and the mother of the murdered young man, but then she disappears (leaving a blank farewell letter) and the role is too small for her talent. It is precisely the gallery of secondary characters that I liked. Two gangs of gangsters face each other, and between the bloody episodes we have the opportunity to get to know some characters drawn with originality and humor. Two examples: the band of American-Indian villains and ‘Mustang’, the character played by Domenick Lombardozzi, who acts as tutor of the son of the gangster boss, too busy with the liquidation of enemies and his own fits of hysteria to have time to be a father. Philip Remy Øgaard‘s cinematography spectacularly reconstructs the surroundings of the city of Denver (although the filming was done in Canada), but the element of horror that was created in the Norwegian film by the huge snowplow transformed into the fatal weapon is still missing. In the end, no one comes out very disappointed from watching ‘Cold Pursuit‘: neither fans of revenge action movies nor fans of gangster comedies. Maybe only Scandinavian movie lovers who are not willing to accept any compromise in an American remake.
‘Drowning by Numbers‘ (1988) belongs to the most prolific and successful decade of director Peter Greenaway‘s career. It was the penultimate film made in that decade and is apparently one of his most accessible films of that period. It has a relatively simple and easy-to-follow narrative structure, and for those who did not grasp the exact meaning of the events from the first occurrence, the same sequence of actions is repeated three times. Some of the characters are reminiscent of the evil criminals in the films of the Coen brothers, filmmakers who were building their fame in the same decade, characters who at certain moments are helped by luck more than they deserve, until fate catches up with them. For lovers of action comedies, however, I believe that the film risks seeming banal, and this because its purpose is before all to display an amazing range of details and quotes imported from folklore, literature, plastic arts and all acted by an anarchist logic descending from the artistic avant-garde of the first half of the 20th century. In fact, on a second viewing, ‘Drowning by Numbers‘ might become less comprehensible for fans of action movie genres, while the informed viewers, freed from following the story, will discover a universe of details and ornaments that will delight them.
The story, as far as it matters, begins with a murder. A pretty mature lady named Cissie Colpits catches her husband with another woman while they are enjoying themselves in two hot baths. Taking advantage of the two’s advanced state of intoxication, Cissie casually drowns her husband and reports the crime to the coroner. This position, I think specifically English, is a kind of locally elected judge who investigates deaths. If he decides that there was nothing suspicious, the police are not called to investigate. That’s exactly what the coroner named Madgett, who has set his eyes on the fresh widow, does. Madgett is a strange fellow himself (but what character is not strange in Peter Greenaway‘s films), art collector and possessor of many vices among which laziness is one of the least. He is aided in his investigations by his teenage son Smut, an imaginative boy who hunts butterflies and imagines games. The story repeats itself when Cissie Colpits 2 and Cissie Colpits 3, who may be the daughter and granddaughter of Cissie Colpits 1, also drown their sinful husbands by various methods. The neighbors start to get suspicious, the police are finally involved and the story gets complicated.
Peter Greenaway is one of those filmmakers who in each film invents another universe, with its own laws, with eccentric and colorful characters. Tim Burton and Wes Andersson are his illustrious colleagues. Their worlds descend from the literary tradition of Jonathan Swift and Lewis Carroll. ‘Drowning by Numbers‘, which by the way has numerous associations taken from the world of fine arts, reminded me of Giuseppe Arcimboldo’s paintings. From a distance they look like portraits, when you get closer you see that they are composed of fruit and plants expertly combined and positioned. At Greenaway, when you get even closer, you realize that the fruits are easily damaged. Physical decay and death are recurring themes in ‘Drowning by Numbers‘. Not only through what happens to the characters, but also through the filmed details or through symbols such as the ephemeral butterflies. Even the rhythm imposed by the numbers 1 to 100 that visually punctuate the story implies the finite time of human existence. The cinematography – loaded and decadent – is created by Sacha Vierny, a French cinematographer very familiar with surrealism, collaborator in the 50s and 60s on some of the masterpieces of directors like Resnais or Bunuel, who in the 80s worked a lot with Greenaway. The music is signed by another frequent collaborator of Peter Greenaway from that period – Michael Nyman. If it sounds obsessive, it’s no wonder, since the entire soundtrack is composed of variations on the same four measures from the second movement of Mozart’s Symphony in E, opus 39. ‘Drowning by Numbers‘ is a baroque film, rich in symbols, which demand to be discovered and deciphered, beyond an apparently light and accessible plot. Those who dare to watch or re-watch the film armed with patience and openness will not regret it.
‘Chronique d’une liaison passagère‘ (2022 – distributed on the English-language market under the title ‘Diary of a Fleeting Affair‘) gave me the opportunity to re-encounter the films of Emmanuel Mouret (I liked a lot ‘Lady J.’) and to discover an extremely talented French actor whom I had not noticed before Vincent Macaigne. Mouret has made one of those films that I like: with a script (of which the director is a co-author) that starts from a real life story told with sincerity, based on actors who create roles that they feel and understand, shoot with minimal means but with aesthetics and expressiveness.
As the title says (Emmanuel Mouret likes titles that are as explicit as possible), the film is about a temporary relationship that was not meant to last. Charlotte is a little over 50, Simon is a little under 50. She has been divorced for several years, he is married. He works as a prenatal therapist, we don’t know if she is employed and if so, what profession she has. The two meet at a party where the initiative belongs to her (‘I had seen two men, one danced with another woman the whole time, the second was you’) but he gets caught up in the game, after the party they go for a drink in a bar, then they kiss for the first time. Two weeks later they meet again and the relationship begins. They both seem to have plenty of time at hand, the meetings are becoming more and more frequent. They aim for their relationship to be no-strings-attached and so it stays for a while, with long meetings, some sex, and lots of talking. But is such a connection between a man and a woman, without feelings arising, possible? How long can it last?
If there is a category of ‘family drama’ films, then ‘Chronique d’une liaison passagère‘ would fall under the category of ‘non-family drama’. The model is Bergman’s ‘Scenes from a Marriage’, explicitly quoted in a film-in-film scene, but everything seems to mirror the premise of Bergman’s married couple story. Charlotte has three children, Simon has two children, all of whom are in their teenage years or shortly after, but their fate and the impact of their bond on the children’s feelings does not concern them for a second. We knew absolutely nothing about Simon’s family. At one point Charlotte wants to see a photo of Simon’s wife but quickly gives up on the idea. We only know that he can spend many hours, sometimes missing whole days or nights from home without his wife or children suspecting anything (!). The two build a seemingly perfect wall between their bond and the rest of the world. The threat to their no-strings-attached couple life only comes when they experiment with a ‘threesome’. The younger Louise also comes from a marriage that is falling apart, and it is this connection started from an ad on an Internet site that will create the obligations that the two were avoiding, but in an unexpected direction. Up until that moment we had practically only Sandrine Kiberlain and Vincent Macaigne, the exceptional performers of the two main roles, on the screen. Now the couple will become a triangle, but a (again) non-family triangle. Between the woman and the man, Charlotte and Simon, there was always a gap in initiating and in externalizing feelings. By the time the man gathers courage, it is too late. The orbits of Venus and Mars are moving away and who knows if they will ever get closer again.
‘Everyone lies!’ is the favorite catchphrase of the main character in the American medical drama ‘House, M.D.’. It could very well be the motto of Israeli director Avi Nesher‘s latest film ‘Gan haKofim‘ which is distributed in the English language markets under the title ‘The Monkey House‘ (incorrect translation, from the mysteries of the distributors). His characters surround themselves with smaller or bigger lies that they use to advance professionally and socially, secrets that they keep even from their best friends or even from those they love. The plot of the film, inspired by a real case, is based on deciphering such a network of untruths and on their accumulation leading to the moment of crisis, the one where lies become a burden that prevents the realization of dreams and the fulfillment of personal relationships that matter.
Amitay Kariv, the main hero of the film, is a writer. Israeli screenwriters seem fascinated by this profession, many of the intellectual heroes of recent Israeli films are writers. We never know how good a writer he is. What is certain is that at the time when the story of the film takes place, in the late 80s, he is in a creative crisis and in a period in the shadow – forgotten by readers and ignored by critics. To prepare a comeback, he invents a doctoral thesis about his work authored a PhD student and researcher living in America, a real person who has no idea that her name is being used for this purpose. To impersonate her on a documentation visit in Israel, he hires Margo, a young woman with ambitions to be an actress, who gets the job precisely because she also covered herself in an aura of lies at the interview. The talent of the young woman and the Pygmalion work of the writer create in a few days the character, who will fool many people – literary critics in particular – and will even convince Tamar, the youth love of Amitay, freshly widowed after a marriage that had also been a lie. The scheme starts to work, really well, until complications arise.
The structure of the narration is very interesting, Avi Nesher being also the author of the screenplay. The film opens with a film-in-film sequence that for several minutes makes viewers wonder whether they have not mistaken the cinema hall. Next, for much of the film, the story flows chronologically, accompanied by off-screen commentary from the narrator writer, few enough to not be too distracting. After a false ending to this main part that comprises about two-thirds of the action, we witness a succession of scenes that follow the heroes for several years following the main story. The change of pace is justified as many of the unsolved conflicts are explained and resolved. The lead role is interpeted by Adir Miller, one of Israel’s most popular actors and showmen, at his fourth collaboration with Avi Nesher. His partner is a young and talented actress named Suzanna Papian who is almost a debutant in feature films, until this year she only played a few minor roles, mostly on television. The role in this film and a lead role in a popular television series deservedly catapulted her to stardom. The formidable Shani Cohen fits in very well as Tamar, the hero’s unfulfilled love from his youth. The reconstruction of Israel as it was 30 or so years ago, a period in time when great changes in landscape and atmosphere took place, is rigorous and nostalgic. ‘Gan haKofim‘ brings to the screens something from a world that disappeared, a world where moral dilemmas had a more important place in our lives. Avi Nesher is one of those filmmakers who do not intend to revolutionize the art of film, but who we can be sure does not compromise on quality. The characters in this film may be liars, but they look true and they successfully cross the screen involving the audience in their experiences.
• misiunea Artemis 2 pe care NASA intenționează să o lanseze folosind Sistemul de Lansare Spațială (SLS), trimițând astronauți în jurul Lunii, într-un zbor lunar de zece zile;
• Zborul inaugural al rachetei New Glenn al lui Blue Origin, firma lui Jeff Bezos (întemeietorul Amazon-ului);
• lansări succesive ale lui Starship, un vehicul de lansare supergreu în două etape, aflat în dezvoltare la SpaceX a lui Elon Musk. Este cel mai greu, mai înalt și mai puternic vehicul de lansare spațială care a zburat în spațiu. Starship este destinat să fie complet reutilizabil, ceea ce înseamnă că ambele trepte vor fi recuperate după o misiune și reutilizate. Starship, dacă reușește, va deveni vehiculul principal al misiunilor NASA spre Lună și Marte;
• Misiunea Polaris Dawn – o misiune particulară de zbor spațial uman, operată de SpaceX și inițiată de antreprenorul Jared Isaacman, care împreună cu alți trei membri ai echipajului vor petrece câteva zile pe orbita joasă a Pământului, pe o navă spațială Crew Dragon;
• Primul zbor de probă cu echipaj al navei spațiale Starliner de la Boeing, programat, deocamdată, pentru mijlocul lunii aprilie. Echipajul misiunii, cu durata de opt zile, include piloții de testare Butch Wilmore și Suni William, care vor călători la Stația Spațială Internațională cu capsula reutilizabilă;
• misiunea chineză dus-întors a probei lunare Chang’e-6, într-o încercare de a colecta pentru prima dată material din partea îndepărtată a Lunii;

Someone counted, and if the count is correct, ‘Coup de chance‘ (2023) is the 50th feature film directed by Woody Allen. The Bronx-born director, screenwriter and actor is nearing the end of his ninth decade of life and seventh decade of creativity. We had been used to a rate of one premiere per year for many years. The fact that ‘Coup de chance‘ premiered after a two-year hiatus can be attributed to the pandemic, but also to the fact that Allen finds it increasingly difficult to find financing and logistical support. The reasons are linked to episodes from his private life past that have nothing to do with the films he has made or may make, in a world where many of the judges of morality hide behind internet pseudonyms and the number of those who are ready to explain why they don’t want to see his films is higher than those who wait year after year for the ‘new Woody Allen’. His oscillations between America and Europe brought him again with ‘Coup de chance‘ to France, to Paris, the city that once loved Allen immensely and which Allen continues to love and film as often as he can . ‘Midnight in Paris’, his previous film shot entirely in the City of Lights, had been one of those films touched by a magic wand and a hit with audiences and critics. ‘Coup de chance‘ is much more modest in its ambitions, Paris is the background and not a character, but the pleasure of being and filming here is obvious. The story, however, could have taken place anywhere, in any big city, maybe even Manhattan. The film is spoken in French, acted by French actors and made with an almost exclusively French technical team, but it cannot be said that it is a French film.
Fanny Fournier née Moreau (as married women’s names are written on French identity cards) is young, beautiful, remarried to Jean Fournier, a man whose profession is to make people rich even richer. He is rich himself, and the two of them live in the circles of Parisian society, where at social gatherings money and what money can buy is discussed, and in weekends money and what money can buy is again discussed, when the riches do not go to hunt in the forest. Jean doesn’t believe in chance, for him what looks like chance are events planned by people, even if they look like something else. Fanny is bored and tries to convince herself that she loves Jean, until the day she meets again with Alain, a former high school classmate who had been secretly in love with his beautiful colleague. Is the meeting and the liaison that develops the result of chance? What will happen when the worlds of those who believe in chance and the world of the man who creates and manipulates chances to his will will clash?
As often with Woody Allen, we are dealing with a story about love, infidelity, jealousy and their consequences, which can lead to murder. On film number 50 in his filmography, Allen seems to have lost none of his narrative fluency and the sincerity with which his characters reveal themselves to the camera. The cinematography, with many beautiful moments, belongs to Vittorio Storaro, a cinematographer who mixes emotions with colors, winner of three Oscars, who has accompanied Allen in all his films for the last decade. There’s no shortage of humor, and few things are funnier than a mother-in-law who adores her son-in-law more than her daughter, but becomes a fearsome private detective when she suspects something amiss in his behavior. Valérie Lemercier does a wonderful job in this role. Lou de Laâge, Melvil Poupaud and Niels Schneider – all young and talented actors – are the ones who play the roles in the love triangle whose differences can be interpreted sentimentally (relationship of convenience – true love), social (rich – poor) and intellectual (materialistic – spiritual) but especially through the way they relate to risk. The ending resolves the dilemma in a surprising way. For us as viewers, it remains to be seen if the 50th film will be the last or if Woody Allen will have the chance to make more films and we will have the chance to see them.
I believe that Lenny Bernstein would have liked ‘Maestro‘ (2023) and especially the controversies caused by this film. His immense pride would of course have been flattered by the fact that the film dedicated to him is produced by Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg. He would have also understood the reactions of the audiences. Bernstein did not run away from scandals and, although the era was different, he decided to live his life in his own way. Moral judgments would have left him cold. On the other hand, I think he would have been very amused by the music experts’ analyzes of the way the actor playing him conducts the London Symphony Orchestra in the 6-minute-23-second scene with Mahler’s ‘Resurrection’. Just as the musician had a large number of admirers who loved him, but also enough who challenged him to the point of hatred, ‘Maestro‘ also seems to attract extreme reactions. I think he would also have liked the fact that the director, co-writer and actor who plays him, Bradley Cooper, decided to focus this film on the love story between him and his wife Felicia. In fact, ‘Maestro‘ is not so much the biography of the musician Bernstein as the anatomy of this unique love story, a story sprinkled with many painful moments and with immense sacrifices on the part of the woman who accompanied him for most of his life.
The first historical scene evoked in ‘Maestro‘ is the scene any Bernstein biopic could start with, but the way it’s shot lets viewers know that this is not going to be an ordinary biopic. It describes the moment when, in November 1943, Bernstein learned that he would have the opportunity, that same evening, to conduct the New York Philharmonic, replacing Bruno Walter, who had fallen ill. Question is: where in ‘Maestro‘ does the phone call that changes the course of his life catch him? In bed with a man. A few scenes later the young actress Felicia Montealegre heads to the villa where a party is being held. There he will meet Lenny, and the connection between the two is the backbone of the film’s story. A love story between two people, one an artist, the other a great artist. An asymmetrical love story, where Felicia is the one who gives up part of her acting career to support Lenny, raise the children and keep the family together. Bernstein’s infidelities, especially his relationships with other men, become the subject of rumor and gossip. The two give each other the space of personal freedom, but – at least in the film – it is only the man who benefits from it, while the wife continues to protect her children her family and the social reputation. Felicia’s illness brings Lenny back home, suggesting that their relationship was the one true love of his life.
As an actor, Bradley Cooper creates a remarkable role, aided by exceptional make-up, which not only recreates Bernstein’s physiognomy but perfectly accompanies her as she ages. As a director, Bradley Cooper does some very interesting things. I liked the changes of screen format and the alternation between color and black and white. They logically follow the style of the most popular films made in the respective periods. Two scenes, a few minutes long each, caught my attention in particular. One is that of the concert filmed with the LSO in the millennial cathedral of Ely. Filmed ‘one shot’ with a mobile camera. The second is the explanation scene between Felicia and Lenny, the one where Lenny tries to justify himself for his infidelities. Here, unlike the previously mentioned scene, the camera is fixed and is placed quite far away emphasizing the distance between the two characters, with two large windows in the background, through which we will finally see … Snoopy pass. Such scenes are proof that we are dealing with an outstanding director. But actually, incredibly, ‘Maestro‘ is only his second film as a director. And the first was ‘A Star is Born’! I do not join either the severe critics or the unreserved admirers of this film. In fact, despite the extreme reactions, I gave it an average grade. In my opinion, ‘Maestro‘ is a very interestingly made film, but uneven and shallow in its treatment of certain aspects of Bernstein’s career and personality. A more extensive biography could have said more about such aspects as Bernstein’s Jewishness or Felicia’s social and political involvement. And of course, much more about music. However, ‘Maestro‘ is a film that aims to say more about love and sacrifice in love than about music. Carey Mulligan does a terrific job and is my Academy Awards favorite for a female lead role from what I’ve seen so far this year. I started watching the film as a fan of Leonid Bernstein and nothing in it made me change my mind. On the other hand, I fell in love with Felicia Montealegre.
