‘La denonciation‘ (‘The Denunciation’, a title terribly translated into English as ‘The Immoral Moment‘) begins and ends with two scenes taking place on the streets of Paris. I will not tell anything about their content, because it is a ‘noir’ thriller, but I think I can say that they could stylistically belong to any of the classic and typical films of the French ‘New Wave’. No wonder, because the year of production is 1962 and the film is written and directed by Jacques Doniol-Valcroze, one of those multilateral filmmakers (director, screenwriter, actor, critic) and co-founder in 1951 of ‘Cahiers du Cinema ‘. So this is an ‘author’s film’. We find in it many of the characteristics of the films of the director’s colleagues of generation, but also some samples of obsolete cinema and exploration of directions that did not have much success in what followed in French cinema. It is an interesting film, which passes the exam of time honorably, with good chances to interest not only moviegoers passionate about the history of the ‘New Wave’.
The story is original and has some elements of ambiguity, moral and historical dilemmas that overlap with the complex political realities of France in the early ’60s. The main character is a film producer, well placed in the society of Paris, the son-in-law of a minister, a man belonging to the honorable social circles based on his past as a hero of the Resistance during the German occupation. His past however also hides a trauma that influences his behavior when he is a random witness to a crime, and that causes him to behave strangely during the investigation and the events that follow, even if his social position puts him above any suspicion. The merit of the script is to sketch interesting characters and to describe truthfully the conflicts between the various sectors in a France that was experiencing successive crises and a violent political polarization. In the film, as in the historical reality of the time, the boundaries between ideological conflicts and violent activism, between the political class and the underworld are often blurred.
‘La denonciation‘ belongs to the period of transition to color movies, a period in which the use of black and white film was more and more an aesthetic decision, adopted here as in many other films of the ‘New Wave’. A decision well suited for the atmosphere of ‘film noir’ with hints of political thriller, which takes place mostly in the world of Parisian cabarets with their music and strip shows, in bourgeois houses, art galleries, screening halls, police stations and especially on the streets of Paris that always look good in movies. The lead role is played by Maurice Ronet, a well-known actor at the time, who manages to accurately portray the turmoil and hesitation of the character. The police commissioner who seems always close to secrets without being able to decipher them is played by Sacha Pitoëff, a talented actor with an interesting physiognomy. Françoise Brion and Nicole Berger create two well-defined key female roles. The main problem of the film are the dialogues, too conventional and too theatrical in relation to the situations and the psychology of the characters, and especially the excess of off-screen commentary. I generally dislike off-screen voice because I believe that film is mostly a visual art, and not even the fact that the text of the original version is read by Laurent Terzieff, another well-known actor of that film period, famous for his voice and diction, can help. The dissonance between dialogues and texts on the one hand and the visual qualities of the film is obvious. I think it would be an interesting experience if someone dared to make a version of this film from which the off-screen comments are taken. We would get, I think, a good ‘film noir’, more ambiguous and therefore more modern, anticipating the political thrillers and very good movies that Jean-Pierre Melville would make a few years later.
“Visages villages” (the English title is “Faces Places“) is the last big screen film directed in 2017 by Agnès Varda in collaboration with photographer and mural artist JR. Until her death in 2019, she would make another TV movie dedicated to her own work and career. Maybe it was planned, maybe it wasn’t, but the final two films form a duet. At the age of 89, “Visages villages” is an artistic end to her career as a director, while “Varda par Agnès” is the documentary finale, in which the director comments on her path in life and cinema. I dislike when movies are called “testaments”. I guess Agnès Varda didn’t like that label either. “Visages villages” is a beautiful film, a documentary that talks about France, its places and its people, but more than anything about the two filmmakers, one of whom is a little old lady, with failing eyesight and in need sometimes for a cane to walk, her hair dyed a little funny but sure like no other on the face of the planet, but certainly a lady who loved life, art and people and was determined to live intensely and create until her last breath. And so it was.
The film is a road movie with art and about art. JR invites Agnès Varda to a trip through the villages of France using his truck transformed into a photo studio and the production shop of huge posters based on the photos taken by the two. We are in the age of smartphones, but they still use the traditional Leika cameras. The posters are then glued to buildings, ruins, industrial structures, rocks, trains or trucks. Molded on the shapes of objects they begin a new double life – as structures or utility machines and as works of art. This original creative style practiced by JR meets the art of framing moving images whose master was Agnès Varda. The artistic effect is twofold. The black and white of the photos becomes an element in the color palette of Varda‘s images, who films with passion in open horizons reminiscent of ‘Vagabond‘, one of her most beautiful films. The photographed characters enlarged at bigger-than-life sizes become giant witnesses of their own lives.
“Visages villages” is a special film in Agnès Varda‘s filmography, but also a continuation of some of the stylistic and social themes of her films, as well as of some biographical moments. The subjects photographed are, as in many of the previous films, people from ‘Deep France’ – a waitress at a bar, workers in the two shifts of a chemical plant, the last inhabitants of an abandoned mining settlement, a hornless goat breeder and a militant against cutting the horns of goats, the wives of unionized workers in the harbor of Le Havre. Some of the people and artists whose trajectories intersected with Agnes’s life appear – in the image or in memory -: the photo of an old friend from his early youth will be pasted on a German bunker collapsed on a beach in Normandy, the two will visit the house of writer Nathalie Sarraute and the graves of photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson and his wife, and will set an appointment with Jean-Luc Godard. Eventually, Agnes herself and JR, her traveling and creative companion, become characters. We witness the developing friendship between them, their dialogues about art and the people who create it, about age and about death. “Visages villages” is a beautiful documentary and more than that. I think at the end of the filming JR was a little in love with Agnes. We too.
‘Creștinismul oficial s-a deteriorat însă mult. ‘ (pag. 253-254)
Vasile Ernu are talent de scriitor.
In 1978, when Claude Chabrol made ‘Violette Noziere’, many people in France remembered very well the criminal case of the woman who gives the film its name. It had been one of the scandalous, passionate, and morbid stories of the interwar period, a story that competed on the front pages of Parisian newspapers in 1933 with the news about Adolf Hitler’s rise to power in Germany, and which had divided the French public opinion into two camps, as no another sensational affair had since the Dreyfus case. The heroine of the gloomy story was a 16-year-old girl from a working / mid-class neighborhood, who had poisoned her parents. The father had died but the mother survived. The investigation revealed the double life of a girl suffocated by the environment in which she lived, considered a sinister criminal by some and a victim of social conditions and a perverse family environment by others. However, Chabrol only mentions in passing the media scandal around this case, being rather fascinated by the young woman’s personality and also fascinating his spectators in the way he tells the story of the crime and the circumstances that led to its committing.
The whole film revolves around the heroine played by Isabelle Huppert. The script is quite faithful to the story, presents the facts as reported by the press of the time and does not try to serve surprises or insert speculative interpretations about the reasons for the actions and the psychological sources of the acts committed by the young woman. The director’s attention is focused on reconstructing the confined and devoid of personal separation in which the Noziere family lives, the bohemian environment in which the young high school girl spends her time in the company of students, crooks, and old bourgeois who take advantage of the youth of girls in need for money or sensations. Rejecting both moral judgments and psychoanalytic interpretations, Chabrol lets Isabelle Huppert build the role of the girl who, instead of teenage dreams, plunges into promiscuity, and who travels from adolescent rebellion to murder with an impassive coldness. We don’t find too many reasons in the film that would put us as spectators in the camp of Violette’s supporters, except for the personality of the actress who fills the role with gloomy feelings and self-destructive tension.
Isabelle Huppert achieves with the part of Violette in this film one of the first great roles of a fabulous career. She is supported by Stéphane Audran (the director’s second wife, whom he would break up after 14 years of marriage and many remarkable films in the same year 1978) and Jean Carmet, one of those talented French actors whom Chabrol was giving the opportunity of consistent parts even if they were not first rank stars. A special award should be given to those who recognize Fabrice Luchini in one of the first roles of his film career. The style of the story is interesting and elaborate, temporally separated frames continue visually one another, flashbacks and imaginary scenes (especially from Violetta’s fantasies or nightmares) are interleaved nervously and non-linearly, but perfectly following the logic of the action. ‘Violette Noziere‘ manages to describe the interwar social environment, with social contradictions, moral prejudices, inequalities and stigmas related to the status of women and the pressure of the press of sensation. The film also intents to be a psychological study into the motives of the crime. Here, I think intentionally, the answer is not clear. We are shown the conditions that can generate crime, but not the gates that open between reality and horror. Judgments belong to us, the spectators.
Lac. Apă. Posibil viață.
(sursa imaginii: mars.nasa.gov/mars2020/)

I had the joy of living another one of those events that give beauty to the life of a cinephile. My first encounter with Jacques Dutronc dates about half a century ago when I was listening to the shows on Radio Luxembourg behind the Iron Curtain. He was and remains perhaps the best French rocker. (Sorry, Johnny Hallyday!) Vincent Van Gogh is a huge artist, one of those who changed the course of art history. But I didn’t know that Dutronc played Vincent in a biopic. But most of all, I didn’t know Maurice Pialat. Many biographical films have been made about Van Gogh and will probably be made more. ‘Van Gogh‘ made in 1991 by Pialat is a film different from all the others. I even wonder if it should be considered a biopic. Maybe it would be more appropriate to call it an anti-biopic. I have not seen other films by Maurice Pialat, and I intend to recover this unforgivable ignorance of mine as soon as I can find other films of his. In this movie, Pialat seems to desire to make cinema as Vincent created. The painter did not resume to replicate the world around him as the academics had done, nor to observe and reinterpret it through his eyes and vision as an artist as the Impressionists did. Instead, he started from reality and created something new. Likewise, Maurice Pialat starts from the ultra-well-known biography of the painter and the well-documented period of the last months of his life to create on screen his own vision of the man and of the artist Van Gogh and of the people and the world around him.
The trivially known details are missing. There is no cut ear or grotesque bandage around the head. There is no insistence on the mystery of the fatal shooting. But the essence is present. With his physique and especially his shaken psyche, the artist crushed by the lack of understanding and recognition of his art by the surrounding society took refuge in the last months of his life in Auvers-sur-Oise, being treated by Dr. Gachet (Gérard Séty) . The connection with his brother Theo (Bernard Le Coq), as reflected in their correspondence, goes through a stormy period, with ups and downs, as in his brother’s life we witness the appearance of his wife and of his first and only child. Refused, perhaps feeling exiled from the bourgeois world, Vincent Van Gogh finds dialogue partners in women and in the simple people in the village whose portraits he paints. It is a period of feverish creation, as the end approaches the intensity of his artistic burning increases. The closer he gets to the end the more exuberant his works. Landscapes are on fire, nature is in convulsion, reflecting the storms inside. Pialat adds here another dimension, undocumented but human and credible. Van Gogh may be a depressed person, but not a passive one, he is very much alive. He lives intensely, eats, drinks, and has relationships with several women. Some are prostitutes, but not only, and at least one of the connections, the one with Dr. Gachet’s young daughter (Alexandra London) could promise a chance to regain his balance. But it is too late, and perhaps the awareness of this impossible situation is what precipitates his end.
True to his conception of creating something new and not of just putting on screen the biography, Maurice Pialat made no effort to make Jacques Dutronc look like Van Gogh, nor did he force him to grow the iconic red beard. Dutronc‘s role is far from what other actors have imagined, from Kirk Douglas to Willem Dafoe. It is actually the refusal of conformist adaptation, the simplicity of human relationships, the thirst for life and creation, the power to love that bring him closer to what Vincent Van Gogh may have been in reality. Among the other actors (all very good) in the film I would mention Gérard Séty with a complex and ambiguous portrait of Dr. Gachet and Elsa Zylberstein in the role of a beautiful and sensual prostitute. The scenes of the parties in the brothels of Paris and of the meetings between Vincent and Theo, either in Dr. Gachet’s house or on the banks of the Oise, are also very well directed. The frames seem to be taken from Manet’s paintings. Women’s costumes, dresses and hairstyles descend from Monet’s paintings. The figures and bodies of the women come from Renoir. Visually Maurice Pialat quotes the masters of Impressionism and not Vincent. In fact, from his art, we see from time to time only glimpses when a painting appears in the frame. We see the art in character instead. Vincent’s substance can found in his behavior. This unique film reconstructs the man Van Gogh from the essence of his art.
Films about the painters of the artistic revolution in France of the last decades of the 19th century have long become a stand-alone cinematic genre. Impressionists and post-impressionists changed the course of art and reinvented the process of artistic creation. The interest related to their lives and their artistic careers was amplified by the fact that their biographies intersected creating a group dynamic, well documented by the writers of the time but also by the vast correspondence that many of them left behind. ‘Cezanne et Moi‘, Danièle Thompson‘s 2016 film follows the relationship between the painter Paul Cezanne and the writer Emile Zola from their childhood in Aix-en-Provence, going through the stormy 1860s spent in Paris where the two sought their way in life and in art, until the final decades of their lives, when their personal and artistic paths parted, at least apparently, in an argument as spectacular and passionate as their friendship had been until then. For both of them, this relationship was the friendship of their lives, probably more important than their marriages and relationships. What united them was childhood and youth, what separated them towards the end was art.
‘Cezanne et Moi‘ is more of a psychological study than a film about art. The narrative technique of flashbacks reconstructs the paths in life of the child of a banker who became a radical painter in conceptions and art (Cezanne – Guillaume Gallienne) and of the son of Italian immigrants (Zola – Guillaume Canet) who became one of the most important writers of France and an opinion journalist with great influence. The writer travels the social path of gentrification as his successful books bring him public recognition. The painter remains a marginal and a loner, he does not integrate in the social or artistic circles of the time. The friendship between the two men also seems to invade their personal lives, and director Danièle Thompson does not hesitate to describe critically and with feminist opprobrium their misogynistic attitude and the lack of sensitivity towards the women in their lives. The social and artistic environment of Paris in which the rise of the bourgeoisie took place in parallel with the radicalization of art is described in great detail, although the spectator a little careless or less knowledgeable in the history of French painting and literature in the second half of the 19th century may miss the presence and importance of some of the personalities that appear on the screen for just a few seconds.
‘Cezanne et Moi‘ is a biopic that allows itself some freedoms, despite the repeated mention of the years and places where important scenes take place. Some of the situations are imagined, some of the lines are taken from Zola’s books and articles, or from the correspondence between the two artist friends and rivals. The two actors who play the main roles are trained in the theater school of Comedie Francaise, which is an advantage because of the deep cultural understanding and respect for the personalities embodied on the screen, but also a disadvantage because we can feel a certain rigidity of the actors in relation to the camera. Guillaume Canet‘s Zola has more warmth, calm and prestige while Guillaume Gallienne‘s Cezanne plays his disorder and anxieties in a more exteriorized manner, with repetitive hysteria not always clearly motivated. Excellent makeup helps them cross ages. The cinematography is superb, especially in the scenes filmed in Provence, which insinuate, a little demonstratively perhaps, the way the landscape and light have permeated Cezanne’s art. However, the artistic facets of the two personalities remain hidden. What separated the two friends in the end was art. To write his book about the artistic environment of Paris, Emile Zola used Cezanne’s life and person as raw material, he exposed his friend to the public, and the painter never forgave him for that. Revolutionizing painting, Cezanne received little recognition and appreciation during his lifetime except for some of the felloew artists, and Zola joined the critical chorus at a delicate time. Only death and posterity appeased them and their names remain together for all those who came later. ‘Cezanne et Moi‘ tells a lot about the friendship and ego clashes between the two, but too little about their art. Only towards the end of the film, in the credits, the images of nature melting in the paintings remind us of what it is really about when we say the name of Paul Cezanne.
There are quite a few reasons why ‘Hotel Artemis‘, the 2018 film by first time director Drew Pearce, would be worth seeing. First of all, the cast, in which Jodie Foster appears for the first time after a five-year break (her previous film was also a sci-fi action dystopia – Hotel Artemis) but also Jeff Goldblum, Sofia Boutella, and others. The design and cinematography as we can guess from the posters and ‘trailers’ are interesting and it is obvious that money and talent have been invested in them. The idea is quite original and many of the characters that appear on the screen bring with them interesting stories. And yet, the film disappoints. I believe that the main problem is in the script. The concept is underdeveloped and many of the heroes disappear before we have time to care about them. Most of the films that come out of American studios nowasays suffer from excessive length, because the addition of many minutes, sometimes tens of minutes, which unnecessarily prolong viewing times. ‘Hotel Artemis‘ suffers from being too short. With less than 90 minutes of actual screening time, the film fails to say all that needs to be said, and the ratio between content and action is excessively unbalanced in favor of the action, which itself is violent but not spectacular or original enough to compensate.
Los Angeles, the City of Angels of 2028 is in flames, with demonstrations and violent confrontations opposing the police and the army on one side, and the population rebelled against corporations and the economic and ecological crisis on the other side. Criminals control the streets. There is no running water, the power outages hotpermanently and a night curfew is imposed. The ‘Nurse’, a rather old woman (Jodie Foster wearing a sperical make-up designed to make her look older) takes care of the Artemis Hotel, furnished in the ‘Art Deco’ style which is actually a hospital that takes care of injured criminals. Fate brings simmultaneously in the hotel that night two gangster brotherst who just commited a burglary, a paid assassin, the injured local mob boss who is also the owner of the hotel and a seriously injured policewoman who is also linked to the nurse’s biography and tragic events decades ago. Confrontations are inevitable and the fate of the institution, which was a kind of cease-fire oasis in which weapons and conflicts are left at the entrance, is called into question.
The cinematic qualities and the remarkable stylish sets of the film are not enough to compensate for the lack of consistency of the story. Not even the main character, the Nurse, manages to convince, although she benefits from most of the time on screen and from Jodie Foster‘s acting performance.’Hotel Artemis‘ looks more like a sketch of a dystopian action film than the film itself. I think that it’s just the spectators interested only in the scenes of violent action who will come out, maybe, satisfied from watching. This does not require so much talen invested in acting or creating sets. The others, that is us, we will wait for the full movie.
‘Losing Alice‘ (the Hebrew title is ‘L’abed et Alice‘) is a very ambitious Israeli television production, an eight-episode mini-series that bears no resemblance to anything ever produced for the ‘small screens’ in Israel. Apple TV bought this series, together with ‘Tehran‘ about which I wrote a few weeks ago, for international broadcasting, and I am very curious how it will be received by the audiences from other countries. If I were to look for a term of reference or comparison, the most obvious example I could find is the first season of David Lynch‘s ‘Twin Peaks‘, which combines a police investigation with the social and psychological analysis of a community from the northwestern United States, and found itself shrouded in an atmosphere of decadent and unsettling mystery and magic, in which the differences between reality and imagination, between memories and dreams, were quickly erased. Same in ‘Losing Alice‘ where we are dealing with a suicide, but one which is part of a movie script. The police investigation is replaced here by the games between reality and imagination, between the film production and the events that take place in the film, influencing each other. A famous saying tells that the film sometimes ‘beats reality’. In the series created and directed by Sigal Avin, the film invades reality.
We are dealing with a ‘triangle’ but not exactly a classic one. Two of the main characters, Alice (Ayelet Zurer) and David (Gal Toren) are the ideal couple in the Israeli art industry. She is an acclaimed film director (although she hasn’t directed anything new for a long time) and a film teacher, he is a successful actor. When the script written by the much younger Sophie (Lihi Kornowski) arrives on the disks of their computers, they both immediately notice the potential but also the dangers. The script proposes a violent and erotic story, ending with a suicide. The screenwriter is quick to appear in the well-settled life of the couple who live with their three daughters in a villa in a picturesque location, with nice and friendly neighbors. Strange events are starting to happen around the team that is being formed to make the film. The director who was originally supposed to make the film disappears, and Alice will take his place, using Sophie’s screenplay as a ramp for re-launching her career. Sophie seems to be maneuvering to take control of the film, and maybe more than that. She becomes the lead actress and the partner of David on screen. Did the relationship in the scenario between the mature man and the much younger woman materialize in reality? Does the script really belong to Sophie or to another film student, who had also mysteriously disappeared? Her ambitions don’t seem to stop with the movie. Sophie takes control of the lives of the director and the main actor who is her husband, she attracts them more and more in her dangerous world, the world of another generation, a reality distorted with other kinds of passions and fantasies. I stop from telling more in order to leave the pleasure of discovering the many mysteries of this story to future spectators.

The series permanently combines three action plans. Outside there is the Israeli reality, described with precision and attention to detail – the spacious house of David and Alice and the smaller apartments of the other characters, trains and roads, meeting and production rooms. ‘Losing Alice‘ is also the story of a film, from screenwriting to directing at Cannes, and the ‘film in film’ technique is skillfully used to create the second plan of the story, with the film sets, the hotel chosen as the location for the key scenes , and the movie itself, the creation for which Alice risks her mental balance and her personal life. Finally, the third plan is the imaginary with dreams, fantasies, and nightmares combining violence with erotica. Their core is in the script of the film written by Sophie, but they risk spilling over into the other realities – the one in the movie, and the one outside, that is, in the lives of the heroes.
‘Losing Alice‘ has eight episodes. The best in my opinion were the first two and the final episode. The dramatic structure created in the first two episodes supports the rest of the series, but not everything that happens between episodes 3 and 6 seemed interesting to me, there are rehearsals, I think the series could be shorter by about two episodes, and I think from here it could have been cut. Episode 7 (the penultimate) has a special status, a key scene takes place in it, it has an almost independent structure and different from the rest of the series. But the episode didn’t seem very successful to me, and I think it’s another proof that Israeli directors rarely manage to put on the screen the passion that gives quality to good erotic scenes. Ayelet Zurer plays the role of Alice excellently, with a fragile double balance between reason and passion, between artistic sacrifice and the risks it involves in the lives of art creators. The script often makes her repeat the same feelings, but the problem is not the actress. The young actress Lihi Kornowski creates a mysterious and dangerous role, she is the one who dominates the story, leaving us to constantly wonder if we are dealing with an ambitious young woman, maybe also a victim of the passions of others, or with an incarnation of the devil. Gal Toren completes the triangle, his interpretation is correct, but he seems to be missing something of the charismatic aura that his character implies. The image contributes to the construction of the atmosphere, with a color palette borrowed from good thriller or horror movies. With ‘Losing Alice’, the director and screenwriter aimed very high, wanting to create a tension series that starts from the Israeli reality but reaches different territories from those approached in local films and series so far. I think he succeeded for the most part, but not totally. Let’s see what spectators from other parts of the world will say.
Israeli director Avi Nesher‘s 2007 film ‘The Secrets‘ (the Hebrew title is ‘HaSodot‘) predates the success of films and TV series whose characters and stories are inspired by ultra-religious Orthodox Jewish communities. It is an environment that has aroused the interest and sometimes fascination of many, for various reasons. The approaches of screenwriters and directors who have created films in what we can consider a cinematic genre of its own are also diverse. A few classic Hollywood movies started from the literature (mostly written in Yiddish) depicting the lives of Jews in Eastern Europe before the Holocaust, a world completely lost in the tragedy of the genocide. Newer American and Canadian films have dealt with the communities who found shelter in North America. Finally, for the Israeli cinema, the theme of the life of religious Jews was dealt with in a broader social and cultural context, in a country of immigrants in which the coexistence of those from all over the world, with different traditions and ways of living their Jewishness often offers conflicting aspects. ‘The Secrets‘ is a film that manages to bring to life on screen a beautiful story, with strong characters, and situations that highlight some of the contradictions of behavior and values of the ultra-religious Jewish society.
Noemi (Ania Bukstein) and Michel (Michal Shtamler), the main heroines of the film, are colleagues in a religious education institution in the town of Safed in northern Israel. The institution itself (‘midrashah’) is significant for the slow progress of equalizing the status of women and men in Orthodox communities. Even if they both study the same subject, only men can ascend to the position of rabbi, while the study of women stops once they get married and start taking care of family and children. The school in the film functions as a combination of religious school and marriage partners matching service. If Yentl‘s character played by Barbra Streisand and in the famous 1983 movie which is a classic of the genre could be split in two, then Noemi and Michel would be the two facets of Yentl. Noemi is intelligent and studious, trying to conquer the fortresses of rabbinic wisdom through study. Michel is superficial in her studies, but has some experience with the world outside the community, her best quality being the fact that she perceives the world with his heart. Michel’s generosity is complemented by Naomi’s depth. The two friends are given the task of helping Anouk (Fanny Ardant), a terminally ill woman with a tragic past. When they learn more about her destiny, they will try to help the foreign woman to redeem her life’s mistakes. The secrets in Avi Nesher‘s film are the taboos the two will have to face, with the innocence and naivety of their age, but also with the moral power that springs from a well-founded value system. These are serious issues from the perspective of religious Jews – the women’s ambition to know and act beyond the status limits imposed by tradition, the use of Kabbalistic rituals, the slipping of the friendship between the two girls just out of adolescence towards a ‘forbidden’ relationship. The treatment sometimes seems a bit simplistic and sentimental, the story is mixed with melodrama in some places, but the approach is respectful and nuanced.
One of the main qualities of the film is that it brings to life a few strong and excellently characterized women characters. Ania Bukstein creates a Noemi who is hard to forget, a teenager who is still looking for her way and still has a lot to discover in life and in herself, but who is guided by intelligence and an admirable moral compass. The young Israeli actress manages to shadow at some moments Fanny Ardant, one of the stars of the French screen and one of my favorite actresses. I also found the role of the rabbiness principal of the school played by Tiki Dayan special. Noemi represents what she was perhaps in her youth, but also what Noemi wants to avoid becoming by conforming to the unequal norms of a society that is changing too slowly. The world of women in the film eclipses that of men, which sometimes seems simplistic and brutal, except for the charming character played by Adir Miller. The cinematography created by director Avi Nesher makes good use of the setting provided by the city of Safed, the most special of the four cities that maintained Jewish wisdom in the centuries of exile, a city where nature combines with tradition, magic and arts. Along with Shuli Rand‘s ‘Ushpizin‘ (with the director himself belonging to the ultra-religious milieu) ‘The Secrets‘ is one of the films of the first decade of the 21st century that presents in a sensitive and authentic way the Jewish religious life in Israel, without avoiding its tough ad controversial aspects. It is a film with many beautiful moments about love and wisdom, about coming to age and about finding the way in life. Recommended.
