a horror movie packed in a box of chocolates (film: The Voices – Marjane Satrapi, 2014)

Marjane Satrapi bought her fame with the formidable “Persepolis”, one of those books that promoted comics at the most serious artistic level, a largely autobiographical story describing the author’s childhood during the Islamic revolution in Iran. After bringing this book to screen into an excellent animated film, Satrapi began a career as an actors feature films director, experimenting in different genres. ‘The Voices‘ made in 2014 is the result of one of these experiments. It’s a movie that may mislead if you look at the poster and even after watching about a quarter of it. It starts as a sweet romantic comedy in an American town. It continues in something completely different, gloomy and decadent, and those who are afraid of spoilers should better stop reading here. Fans of political correctness and those who are really scared by horror movies can also give up. The rest are invited to join the adventure.

The story takes place in a very typical American town, where the main attractions are the bowling alley and the burgers and Chinese restaurants. Jerry (Ryan Reynolds), the hero of the film, works in a factory that packs something in big boxes, stacks them and ships them. Jerry looks good, he’s a nice guy, the girls in the accounting and finance departments compete to be chosen by him for a date, and even his weirdness of talking loud with his dog and cat its (very cued pets, by the way) when coming home does not seem something to worry about, after all this happens all the time in the Disney studio movies. Maybe we should be a little worried about his regular visits to the psychologist, but she (excellently played by Jacki Weaver) seems more psychotic than her patient, a situation which often happens in reality. For me at least it was a surprise when the story went crazy. Really badly crazy.

I liked the way Marjane Satrapi tells the story. It’s a black comedy, a horror movie packaged as a romantic comedy with talking animals. When the romance and the voices of the animals turn out to be the visions of a serial killer, the viewer understands that everything until then was a very well executed convention. Fragments of reality are interspersed, but the vision remains that of the hero. If we are to look for a classic reference, then it would be Hitchcock‘s ‘Psycho‘ if it had been filmed from the perspective of Norman Bates. Even when blood starts to flow, we are not allowed to completely enter the horror mood because it’s then only that the romance between Jerry and Lisa begins, and Ryan Reynolds and Anna Kendrick are the perfect actors for a romantic comedy. The cinematography and the sets are excellently designed, and the bowling alley on the floor of which the hero’s home is located has a chance to become a cult film setting. Don’t make the mistake of leaving viewing when everything seems to be over, because the ending and the credits provide another commercial packaging for the horror story, that of a musical. Is the musical ‘The Voices’ in preparation for Broadway? I would not be that surprised.

a cosmonaut meets Alien (film: Sputnik – Egor Abramenko, 2020)

Sputnik‘, the name of the Russian science fiction film directed by Egor Abramenko, immediately brings to mind the period of the beginning of the space era six decades ago, and the technological and political competition between the two superpowers of the time – the United States and the Soviet Union. If in terms of launching the first satellites and sending the first people to space, the Soviet Union had for a time a considerable advance, in the parallel competition, that of science fiction films, there was no doubt that the Americans dominated permanently. And yet, there was also a tradition of films about space exploration made by Russian studios and directors, materialized in successful films like ‘Planeta bur‘, and from this tradition, renewed in the recent decades, descends the film ‘Sputnik‘. Its sources of inspiration however are also space horror films like the ‘Alien‘ series. The two lessons are well learned, and we are dealing with a well-made science fiction flick. The dose of originality, at least for the spectators less familiar with this geopolitical space, can be found not necessarily in the story itself but in the placement of the action in 1983, the last decade of existence of the Soviet Union. The context in this case matters.

The hero of the film is Konstantin, a Soviet cosmonaut (Pyotr Fyodorov) who returns from a mission on the space station. Something happens during the maneuvers of re-entry into the atmosphere. Konstantin loses consciousness for a while, and when he wakes up on Earth he finds out that his mission partner has not survived. The story takes place in the Soviet Union in 1983, a time when bad news were not made public, and Konstantin instead of the expected hero reception he expected is placed isolation in a remote military base and subjected to a KGB-like investigation by colonel Semiradov (Fedor Bondarchuk) and his assistants. As the presence of a living extraterrestrial entity is suspected, psychologist Tatyana Klimova (Oksana Akinshina) is called for help. She is of course blonde, beautiful, and brings with her a baggage of her personal traumas. If the line of the story seems familiar to you from movies like ‘Arrival‘, I think it’s not a coincidence but a direct inspiration. What is different is the atmosphere of permanent surveillance, suspicion and terror in which all the heroes live. KGB methods were still in used in those years, people were still dominated by fear, and the heroes were more likely to find allies among aliens than among their human fellows. Political thriller is added to space horror and the mix works quite well.

Oksana Akinshina succeeds to create a credible, beautiful, intelligent heroine, sensitive to psychological nuances, which can be added to the gallery of female heroes who are space researchers who at least on screens balance the gender inequality still existing in this field. But the most formidable role belongs to Fedor Bondarchuk, the son of Sergey Bondarchuk, the famous Soviet director of the second half of the last century, and himself a multilateral personality (actor, producer, director). Colonel Semiradov created by him is a ‘bad guy’ that gives shivers, acted realistically with maximum attention to detail, in the style of good Russian cinema. If this film had been made elsewhere, Max von Sydow could have been cast. The cinematography is reasonable, the special effects are not the most spectacular, but it’s hard to imagine space monsters after ‘Alien‘. The excellent sets combine a scientific research center with a prison or a concentration camp. Egor Abramenko is in his first feature film, but ‘Sputnik‘ doesn’t look like a rookie movie at all. On the contrary, I think that the director demonstrates skill in handling the tools of the profession and applying the lessons learned from different sources. I hope that he will have the chance to receive some original scripts, or maybe he will write them himself in order to be able to develop his talent creatively.

Berlin according to Burhan Qurbani (film: Berlin Alexanderplatz – Burhan Qurbani, 2020)

The ambitious German director Burhan Qurbani faced a double legend when he decided to make his ‘Berlin Alexanderplatz‘. The literary starting point is Alfred Döblin‘s novel written and published during the Weimar Republic, a book that is repeatedly included in almost all the Top 100 rankings of the most remarkable novels, whether they are about German literature, about the 20th century books, or simply about the best novels ever written. This is the third transposition of the book on the screen. The second, a 14-episode miniseries, was a television saga from the early 1980s and one of the most important creations of Rainer Werner Fassbinder, a visionary filmmaker at the peak but also near the end of a career and of a too short life. Like many other daring creators, Qurbani was not intimidated by the text, extracted its essence, rewrote the lines of action and filtered and re-positioned some characters, creating a film that is undoubtedly his, a film about early 21st century Berlin, about Germany, multiculturalism and its current problems, but at the same time a film about a society in crisis and about characters facing cruel realities, forced to moral compromises. It is a colorful and noisy film, expressive and shocking, multi-ethnic and very German at the same time. Just like Berlin is nowadays.

Franz, the main hero of the novel is in this film, at least at the begining, Francis (Welket Bungué), a migrant from Guinea Bissau. The death of the Ida, which triggers the story and the hero’s attempt towards moral recovery the takes place in the opening scene of the film during an illegal crossing of the Mediterranean Sea. The decadent Berlin of the 1920s is replaced in this film by contemporary Berlin, with its bars and parties, but also with drug trafficking, prostitution and gang-controlled violence. The path to a decent life seems to be closed to immigrants marked by their different looks and cultures. The transformation of the hero from Francis into Franz, sardonic characterized by himself as an example of a German success story, goes through a pact with the devil embodied by his Mephistophelean friend Reinhold (Albrecht Schuch). Francis is one of those heroes who destroys everything he loves. The ties with the two women he meets – the exotic Eva (Annabelle Mandeng) and especially Mieze (Jella Haase), the beautiful high-class prostitute – could perhaps offer a chance of recovery if the two women were not, each in her way, also victims of a world that seems to be living its deception to postpone a catastrophe that seems imminent.

This deeply pessimistic view dominates the film. Döblin‘s novel was written shortly before the rise of Nazism in Germany. The different and open Germany of today is less present on the screen. The epilogue seems to try to balance this approach a bit, but those who have read the book or seen Fassbinder‘s series know that it is a dream. The film has a screening time of three hours, but that was no problem for me because the characters are captivating and the story flows smoothly. The script and Eva’s off-screen voice use dialogue and text from the book, a collage scripting technique that works flawlessly. Welket Bungué creates an admirable Francis / Franz – a statuesque physique, a sensitive and dignified character, a man engaged in a struggle with little hope of success to recover morally and socially. Albrecht Schuch patners in an extremely complex Reinhold, a character of charismatic evil. The relationship between the two is characterized by friendship mixed with hatred, complicity in passions, debauchery and crime. The roles of the two women are a bit stingier in terms of the evolution of the characters, but the two actresses, like the rest of the cast, perform them admirably. The cinematography dominated by black and red of Yoshi Heimrath and the music of Dascha Dauenhauer perfectly serve the director’s intentions. With this film Burhan Qurbani won his place in the front line of the contemporary German directors. ‘Berlin Alexanderplatz‘ 2020 is his Berlin.

going to the gym may be dangerous for your health (film: Muscle – Gerard Johnson, 2019)

If you are a big fan of gyms, then ‘Muscle‘ made in 2019 by English director Gerard Johnson might annoy you. If you are planning to start such activities you may change your mind. The film by the English screenwriter and independent director frontally attacks the myth of the healthy masculinity of these establishments, following their hero in an event that begins as a social drama with accents of family and morals comedy and turns into a psychological thriller with dark shades as their characters and intentions become clearer. ‘Muscle‘ is not a perfect film and at times explores the limits of what is acceptable or bearable on screen, but it boldly tackles a topic worth considering and offers many interesting ideas and cinematic moments.

Simon, the hero of the film (Cavan Clerkin) is a small tele-marketing clerk who works in an oppressive environment like those who appeared in the movies of the middle of the last century, with workers under constant threat of dismissal if they do not reach their quotas, with a stressful supervisor and especially with a whiteboard on which the sales of each of the workers are marked with lines. His marriage is not going well either, and his self-confidence is zero. A savior seems to appear in his life after Simon, following a TV commercial enrolls at a local fitness room where he meets the charismatic Terry (Craig Fairbrass) who starts playing the role of personal trainer and spiritual mentor. As his muscles thicken due to exercise but also to ‘nutritional supplements’ and injected steroids and hormones, Simon’s self-confidence increases and professional results are not long in coming. But something very wrong is happening with his personality and in his personal life. He becomes irritable and aggressive, Sarah, his wife (Polly Maberly) cannot stand and leaves him, he enters in conflict with co-workers and is fired. Again Terry seems to offer him the ‘lifeline’ but his intrusion into Simon’s life becomes deeply annoying. And then, Terry’s biography hides secrets while the circumstances and activities in which he drags the former office worker, now a ‘mensch’ with swollen muscles and a thick neck, become more and more dubious. Is there any chance to get out?

The story is harsh and maybe, it must be said, quite predictable. The completely open finale puzzled me a bit, the movie seems to end five minutes before the real end. From a cinematic point of view, however, the achievement is remarkable. The image signed by Stuart Bentley uses black and white very suitable for the subject and atmosphere and offers some memorable frames. Cavan Clerkin creates a memorable role, in which the transformation from a fat middle-aged clerk into a stocky, muscular man included physical training added to his acting talent. Craig Fairbrass is extremely appropriate for the role of Terry, although the screenwriter Gerard Johnson was a bit stingy with this character whose past I would have liked to know more about. Undoubtedly however, with ‘Muscle‘, director Gerard Johnson shows us that he is a filmmaker who deserves to be watched.

Bruno Ganz’s adieu with a strong docu-drama about remembrance and the Holocaust (film: Winter Journey – Anders Østergaard, Erzsébet Rácz, 2019)

Winter Journey‘, a film directed by Anders Østergaard and Erzsébet Rácz, brings to the screen the book by Martin Goldsmith, who is also co-author of the screenplay together with the Danish director. Goldsmith is a renowned musicologist, the son of a family of German Jewish musicians who took refuge in the United States during World War II. As in many other Holocaust survivor families, the parents were silent or told very little about what they went through. The book and now the film recreates the dialogues between Martin and his father George, and reveals little-known episodes in the history of racial persecution that were the prelude to genocide. I had the chance to see this original and impressive film at one of its first screenings, at the Haifa International Film Festival, which this year is a virtual event. It is a film that proves that the theme of the Holocaust is far from being exhausted in cinema. ‘Winter Journey‘ also features the latest on-screen role of the great actor who was Bruno Ganz. And what a role!

The film reveals a biography from a period of history that, although it seems to have been quite intensely explored, still keeps many secrets and dark details, little known to the general public. Gunther Goldschmidt was a young student at a music academy, a Jew from a wealthy and culturally assimilated family, when the Nazis came to power in 1933. Within a few months, along with the entire Jewish population of Germany, he would be reduced to the rank of semi-citizen, deprived of basic rights, including the right to continue and complete his musical studies or to play in one of the great orchestras of Germany. He will find a temporary relief in the activity of the Jewish musicians orchestra of the Jüdische Kulturbund, a cultural organization that Nazi propaganda used as a facade for abroad, and which could operate under increasingly strict conditions of censorship and restrictions. Can culture be a shield in times of hardship? What about love? (In the Jewish orchestra Gunther meets the beautiful violinist who would become his wife). Martin, the son, tries to understand, he needs to know the history of his parents and family, maybe first of all to come to peace with his own identity. The father, George, gradually unravels the layers of silence, rediscovers for himself, for his son, and for us, the readers and spectators, the hidden secrets related to fear, humiliations, broken hopes and illusions. His survival in the end seems more like a lucky game of chance. He and his wife managed to reach the shores of the United States due to their talent and musical professions, in one of the last ships from Europe before America went to war. The rest of the family perishes in the flames and ashes of the Holocaust. Gunther Goldschmidth, now George Goldsmith, after arriving in the new country, will give up his career as a musician. The reasons are not elucidated, the son, the spectators, the readers are left to judge them.

The screenwriter and directors build the film as a reconstruction of Martin’s searches and of the dialogues with his father, carried out in the 1990s, after his mother’s death. The technique of pseudo-interviews is used, with Bruno Ganz taking over the role of the father, and with the camera imitating the style of video filming from 20 or 30 years ago. Documentary sequences and reconstructions are interspersed with actor scenes that combine synthetically to recreate the atmosphere of Germany that sinks into the night of dictatorship. In addition, music, a lot of music, especially of the German composers whose performances gradually became forbidden to Jewish musicians. The relationship between father and son is extremely interesting. The dialogue between them is triggered by the search of the son who is looking for his roots, trying to complete the ‘missing chapters’ (I use the title of another recently read book, with a similar theme) from the family history and his identity. However, Martin the son does not appear in the frame at any time, he is permanently behind the camera, although his voice is the one that leads his father’s confessions. George is permanently in front of the camera and he gradually reveals his life story and the mechanisms of survival and adaptation in the extremely difficult circumstances in which life put him. The huge actor who was Bruno Ganz ends his career with a strong, convincing, moving role. ‘Winter Journey‘ becomes a metaphor not only for the biographical journey of the hero of the film Georg Goldsmith but also for the journey in winter, without return, of the actor Bruno Ganz.

CHANGE.WORLD: Arta construiește viitorul

În rubrica CHANGE.WORLD, discutăm tot timpul despre viitor. Cum vor arăta viețile noastre peste un an?

a moral choice (film: La corruzione – Mauro Bolognini, 1963)

In the opening scene of ‘La corruzione‘, the 1963 film by director Mauro Bolognini, the director of an elite Italian high school, he separates from the graduates with a speech in which he exposes a Manichean vision of the world. According to him, the society of the time has two options: the moral one represented by the Catholic faith and the materialist one embodied by the Marxist ideology. For the school graduates, children of the Italian bourgeoisie, the option seems clear. The hero of the film, Stefano Mattoli (Jacques Perrin), heir to an editorial empire in Milan, takes the moral option very seriously and plans to enter a life of priesthood. His father (Alain Cuny) opposes, wishing that his son takes over the business. Can there be a third way? Or perhaps in a crooked world, where principles are violated by everyone, just one, third alternative exists, that of compromise? ‘La corruzione‘ describes a moral drama in simple terms and with a perfect cinematic execution, due to which this apparently minor film, survives very well the almost six decades since it was made.

In the conflict between the father’s materialism (not at all Marxist, on the contrary, very capitalist) and the son’s idealism there is a third character – Adriana (played by Rosanna Schiaffino), the father’s much younger mistress, whom he uses as bait to distract the young Stefano from his priestly thoughts. The woman fascinates with her beauty but is she in control, or is she just another victim of a corrupt world, in which moral integrity and honor have no place? This is not about a love triangle but about an immoral triangle.

Mauro Bolognini‘s cinematic talent and professionalism manage to prevent this film from being a boring debate of ideas despite its serious substance. What we see on screen is a coming to age and family drama, with credible characters and a psychologically charged atmosphere due to the relationship between father and son, and sexual tension due to the presence of Adriana. At one point I wondered whether the story was moving towards the thriller genre. The story has a very modern open ending. Jacques Perrin intensely plays the role of the teenager whose dreams fall apart in the face of reality. Alain Cuny is distant and cold, as the father’s role demands. Rosanna Schiaffino radiates beauty and magnetism. It is also worth mentioning the character of Morandi, the left-wing intellectual and the fallen idol of Stefano, a traitor to the ideals of the anti-fascist resistance. The role is played by Ennio Balbo. Leonida Barboni‘s cinematography is excellent, both when filming outdoors, at sea or on the streets of the early ’60s Milan, but also when he takes us inside the functional headquarters of the editorial corporation or through the lavish but tasteful rooms of the Italian tycoon’s villa. Giovanni Fusco‘s music combines jazz with contemporary classical tones, under the clear and positive influence of the soundtracks of contemporary films produced by the New French Wave. The acting and the cinematic quality make ‘La corruzione‘ a film worth watching or re-watching.

of men and monks (film: Des hommes et des dieux – Xavier Beauvois, 2010)

Xavier Beauvois‘s ‘Des hommes et des dieux‘ (a title that was translated into English with a reversal of nouns as ‘Of Gods and Men‘) addresses the complex issue of confronting terrorism in the Arab world by focusing on an event with a strong symbolic and emotional charge that took place in 1996 – the taking of hostages and the tragic death of seven monks in a Trappist monastery in the mountains of Algeria. To be more precise, most of the film is about the events that preceded the actions of the terrorists, the coexistence of the monks with the surrounding Muslim population and their moral and religious dilemmas. This is a different point of view from most films that deal with this area of conflict, a perspective that gives originality to the approach but which in the end is also the main weakness of the film.

There are many beautiful moments in ‘Des hommes et des dieux‘. The landscapes of the Atlas Mountains, the chapel and the refectory of the monastery, the adjacent village are filmed with a cinematic lens in which aesthetics and love each have their share. Some of the takes have the dramatic beauty of paintings by Caravaggio or El Greco. The human landscape is of the same chosen quality, especially when it comes to the nine monks (seven of whom will end tragically) and the villagers. Each of the nine men represents a distinct personality, the interpretations are simple and profound at the same time, their dedication and dilemmas are rigorously experienced by the actors and shared with the spectators. It would be worth mentioning all the names, I will not do it, I will only mention Lambert Wilson in the role of Father Christian and Michael Lonsdale in the role of the doctor and Brother Luc, who, I think, create in this film two of the best roles in their careers.

The perspective presented is beautiful and emotional. It’s hard not to be moved and to admire the dedication of these people who choose to live in the middle of a community in a foreign country, helping people belonging to a foreign religion, without missionary intentions (at least nothing is visible in the film). Their dilemma is tragic. Few people today choose the option (even as a risk) of martyrdom. But here lays also the main problem of the film. The events are well known, the rhetoric of martyrdom as well as the idealization of the relations between villagers and monks sound good and very politically correct, but they are too idealized to be totally credible. The complex aspects of the conflicts, starting from the sources of terrorism, the corruption of the army and the civil administration and the historical role played by French colonialism are touched very partially or not at all. ‘Des hommes et des dieux‘ proposes a beautiful and original cinematic vision, but only a partial perspective of a complicated reality.

quite a good B-movie (film: Criminal – Ariel Vromen, 2016)

Criminal‘, Ariel Vromen‘s 2016 film is an interesting combination that, depending on the expectations and the mood of the viewers, can disappoint or be a pleasant surprise. It is a spy film based on a science-fiction idea that is not developed in depth, a rather violent action film that fits the B-Movie label. The cast brings together on screen a collection of well-known actors with fame in Hollywood or in the UK. All do their jobs in an exemplary manner, but the exclamation ‘what a waste of talent!’ was probably heard many times at the exit of the screening halls. The story is quite interesting, but the rules of films of this genre do not allow or allow time to add too much substance to the psychological profiles of the characters. The film, being well acted and impeccably made technically, manages to arouse and keep the interest of most viewers, but I failed to avoid a dose of regret for an artistic potential, less commercial but more interesting, which seemed insufficiently exploited .

Criminal‘ begins as an espionage action movie, with a by-the-book chase on the streets of London ending in the violent death of a CIA agent. Here starts the element of science fiction, as his memory is transplanted through an experimental process into the brain of Jericho Stewart (Kevin Costner), a murderer sentenced to life in prison, the kind of Hannibal Lecter. If the pretext seems thin, you can console yourself by learning that scientific experiences with the transfer of the memory of the dead and are quite advanced, although the transfer is made on other physical media than living persons brains. Returning to the film, the stakes of the procedure are not only a suitcase with a large sum of money, but also access to nuclear activation codes. In a short time, the inmate will be free on the streets of London, pursued by espionage agencies and criminal organizations, and in addition to full doubling of personality, with his criminal instincts overlapping the memories and feelings of the dead agent.

The formula works very well and the result is one of the B-movies that I was not at all sorry to see. Ariel Vromen shoots professionally, and the script follows all the rules of action movies. Kevin Costner has the opportunity to be cast in a complex and interesting role. He is an actor who in my opinion has received undeserved criticism, and perhaps this role is the beginning of a come-back, he succeeds well excepting slight exaggerations of physical pain. Tommy Lee Jones as the doctor who invented and leads the memory transfer and Gal Gadot as the wife of the murdered agent manage to make their roles credible and even memorable characters, with the little material at hand. I can’t say the same about Gary Oldman, the only one who deserves the ‘wasted acting talent’ cliché. Could this movie have said more? I believe so, the reason being that the doubling of the personality as a result of the memory transfer could have been written differently and developed in more depth. But this would probably have happened at the expense of the action part, and then the fans of the genre to which the film is targeted would have complained. I hope that at least these would be satisfied.
